View Full Version : Modem settings for Rapid Play (we are over cooking it I understand)
Ok, after a few probs with Populous last night, and various games over the last few months, your trusty reporter decided enough is enough. In desperation, I tried HD. At first, Iassumed I had the wrong number cos the bloke on the other end was quite helpfull ( http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif) and after a chat its been disclosed that WP doesnt like 56K modems, well RP doesnt. (thoo he did say WP will be supporting v90 within 2 weeks.....). Anyhow, in the mean time, anyone using RP has to try and limit thier modem to V34 (336k). Want would be nice is if you all could post modem specific init strings here. From what I can work out, my Diamond 56k I SP flashed to V90 needs a ms bit adding, but the ones I have tried do nothing except stop it working http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/frown.gif What do you do with these strings? add em onto the one you already go? just use the bit that limits it? I am well confused. Any help gratefully recieved!
Ok Hog, first the bad news, just had my phone bill in & it's 'only' £427 so i will be staying at least another 3 months http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif so you better stick the 'bunting 'n' champers' in the cupboard m8y http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif
Now the good news - this is the string to limit a USR/3COM Sportster Flash (flashed to V.90) to 33.6k:
S32.5=1
NOW, what you have to is go Start\Settings\Control Panel\Modems.... click on the modem in question.... select properties\connection\advanced & stick the string in the 'Extra Settings' box & volia, you are now limited to 33.6k!!!
Cool thread Hog, lets just hope that some other's care to contribute as well. http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif

I care...
actually we have been trying reeely hard on helpdesk. Robert and Mebs and the guys there have been doing everything they can to imporove service and I hope your post shows we are beginning to win...
The position with modems is horribly complicated but as Hog says we have real problems with 56k technology. Theres all sorts of flavours and v.90 is not yet a solution. We first recommended people throttle their modems down to 33k6 because this is much better for stability and a nice clear bit of advice to give, however some people found they did get better pings on higher speeds. It all depends...
So whatever works best for you is what to use.
BTW for anyone who is unsure, the modem speed (33k6, 56k etc)is how much data it can shift when streaming large packets and as a burst mode. It is not directly related to ping or the responsiveness of games. Be careful with the reading in games, we always check how the game feels as well as the numbers as we have found measures can be misleading.
