Never heard off ECC ram [which I presume stands for Error Checking and Control]
SDRAM however is very fast[<10Ns]memory, what is does support however is the ECC function, If U look within your BIOS youll find a option to enable it.

er, I do beleive there are two types of sdram one of them is rated at 100mhz for use on bx motherboards I am told, the other is just fast ram, and they r both 168pin so I dont know how you can tell the difference when you buy it...

Yo Fragem, no idea if this is of any use but the following is what i've just ripped off from the Dell UK website:

Maximum speed and capacity.
non-ECC SDRAM is the latest standard technology suitable across the range of applications. The SDRAM memory clock is synchronised with the CPU, so its more efficient and optimised for "bursting" or "streaming" data.

Ultimate integrity and stability.
ECC SDRAM uses advanced management technology to automatically detect and correct bit errors in the system's memory, providing extra protection against the unexpected. Particularly important in a shared data environment.

What are the benefits?
SDRAM is much faster than EDO RAM due to synchronous data access.
Depending on applications and usage, SDRAM can give anywhere between 2% - 5% performance boost over EDO RAM.
100MHz SDRAM delivers up to 50% better performance than 66MHz SDRAM depending on total system throughput.
Dual inline memory modules (DIMMs) reduce upgrade costs by allowing memory to be upgraded singly instead of in pairs.
SDRAM maximises data streaming between the processor, the graphics accelerator and other devices on the PCI bus.
Because Intel Celeron-configured machines use 100MHz RAM, they can easily be upgraded to Pentium II processor technology without changing the memory

Technical glossary

SDRAM - Synchronous Dynamic Random Access Memory is the computer's facility which enables users to access 4 bytes of stored data in a single clock cycle.

EDO RAM - Extended Data Out Random Access Memory requires two clock cycles to access 4 bytes of stored data and is therefore slower than SDRAM.

ECC - Error Checking and Correction is a much-improved version of the standard 'parity' checking for memory integrity, designed for systems and applications where optimum stability and reliability is a must.

Crikey, Flinty you messed up there m8. You shouldn't have credited Dell with the info, then we would all hold you in awe like we do Velvet with regards to programming issues http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/wink.gif
Cool answer tho.

It's funny cause someone called Blueflame posted a pretty much identical question on another message board that i read on the same day that you posted yours.

No probs m8, just me being nosey, thats all http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif

'lo all,
the reason i asked the question was because i was checking out dell's webbie with a view to future purchase and one of the options on model i looked at was either sdram or for a lot more money ecc ram.so thought i would ask a general question to see if it would be worth the extra dosh.
p.s the difference in price was to substitute 256meg of sdram for 128meg ecc ram + £136...(expensive!!) http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/frown.gif

Funny thing again m8, i allways buy Dell machines and will be getting myself a new one about February time... i too will be getting 256mb SDRAM, and like you, i'd rather have that then substituting it for 128mb of ECC.

Also, have you noticed in the 'Buy a Dell' section that their supposedly 'January special offers' are no different to the regular prices???!!!

What processor you getting m8, P2 450?

YUP http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif

been toying with idea of NOT getting any 3d cards built in so that i ca jump straight in when new voodoo 3 comes out (faster than 2 sli voodoo2 allegedly)...
and i REALLY want scsi h/d,but that might be pushing it a bit since i've just got HH..

Fragem signs of so he can clean the spittle of his keyboard...

K FLINT

Fragem, what i got in mind is:

P2 450
256MB SDRAM
14.0GB EIDE H/D (the 7200rpm TURBO one)
ATI XPERT 98D 8MB 2D/3D AGP Graphics Card
Toshiba 4.8x DVD
NO MONITOR.... Dell monitors just don't cut it mate, save your pennies for an iiyama or NEC.

Gonna use my existing Voodoo2 12mb sli & Soundblaster Live from existing PC for now with a view to getting Voodoo 3 when it's released next summer.

BTW, how you getting on with HH? I had it installed at the end of September & have had one or two teething probs (like losing ALL lines for a day at a time!) but it seems to of settled down now.

K FLINT or can i be presumptiuos and call u FLINT http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif

HH has been fine,so far, no real teething probs excep sometimes when i switch from internet use to wireplay it needs a warm reboot on occasion.god knows why.

cya m8

p.s what do you play on w/play?

Dell monitors are fine, the budget 17" isn't too hot but perfectly reasonable. The Trinitron 17" is a re-badged Nokia and one of the best 17" monitors available.
Funny - I'm also looking at buying a Dell soon. I was looking at the new model (256MB, 19" monitor, 17GB HDD, 16MB TNT etc) and was also going to try and hold of going V2 sli and wait for V3. Trouble is now I've decided just to get HH and wait for pay review http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif to see if I can afford both.
How much does HH cost you a month (I mean including your phone calls) - I'm budgeting about £100 a month - enough?

K FLINT

Fragem, you want to call me Flint eh??? hmmm... well i guess it's better then ******* ******* or **** **** so ok then http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif

Flint plays: Quake 2, Half-Life, Unreal , Legal Crime (v.badly), Rumble!, Motox Madness (full & demo), Virual Pool 2, Monster Truck 2, Wargasm, CART racing, Forsaken, GTA, Colin McRae Rally.
(Jack of all trades, master of none etc...)

kitKAT, to be fair, when i bought my current PC (Dell) i had probs with the monitor, sent it back, more probs/sent it back again etc - ended up getting a refund & buying a NEC P750. Maybe i was just unlucky but once bitten, twice shy etc...

HH - you say your budgeting £100 per month but how many hours are you planning on-line?

HH costs me £40 per month (including £15 of 'free calls').
Between me & my brother we have about 140 hours on-line per month & my last phone bill was about £400 for the quarter (all-in).

Don't forget to sort your Friends & Family numbers out & order Premierline - my call discounts on my last bill amounted to £84 http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif

Hey fragem, will you read the post ISDN/PINGS
I said you might be helpful http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif
HH oh I love it, but it went down for a whole 5 days, BT said the voltage it generates across the line burned out some of the outside cable (they said it would show weak/corroded spots on all cables eventually)
anyway they put up a lovely new line and compensated me £27.00 a day, so no complaints from me!!!

ta m8...

Good One

I know that upgraping makes a big difference to gameplay, biut doesnt it just stop after a while with the same games......by the way, i have a Dell too, but it happens to be a P200 with 16 SDRAM and i dont even have a 3d card. What im trying to say is that you dont need to have super expensive computer to enjoy games. If you are wondering, i get 170 pings at q1 and have no extra lag at jedi knight

K FLINT

Fair point Good One - I don't know how old you are but if your 25+ you'll remember the good ole day's of the Spectrum/C64 etc.

Now these machines DID have cool games on (every bit as engrossing as anything the PC can offer today, regardless of spec) without the need (or indeed ability) to keep upgrading this, that or the other every five minutes.

Wow, the stuff that those programmers could get from 48\64k of memory. Today's games programmers have got it easy by all accounts.... 'If it won't run in 64MB then what the hell, put 128mb on the box' etc, etc

Anyway, for me personally, i wasn't about to change my old PC but was made an offer i couldn't resist on my existing one so took the plunge.

I must say that although i'm still in the process of putting all my stuff on at the moment i couldn't believe the difference it made to games like Half-Life/Sin etc. (I thought that these looked pretty cool before but now, WOW!!! http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif)

I think the trouble is that it won't 'just stop after a while' mate.... as long as the likes on Intel etc keep pushing the performance envelope & mugs like me keep buying the latest stuff there's no need for the programmers to get their fingure's out & make the most of the current technology.
