I have purchaced a SupraExpress 56Ki Pro V90 modem and my ISP conection is fantastic (49333) but when I connect to Wireplay\ Gamesworld my connection is locked at 31200 (even though WP states a conection 112XXX).
This happens even if i connect through DUN first and thus is murdering my Quake2 ping rates (400-500)
My question is this. What are the symptoms of connecting to this service which is not currently running v90 with a v90 modem?
Am i likly to get this kind of symptom and is there anything I can do to increase performace, or do I have to wait until WP upgrades to v90?
Why, on one hand, do BT sell V90 modems but on the other hand their gaming sevices dont even support it?
Any help will be much appreciated.

Unfortunatly, I have heard that Wp won't be supporting V.90, but are opting for 56kflex/k56flex instead. If you want to be on the test, you have to get some sort of patch from WP. If it proves to be successful (which it has been so far) they will support k56flex 'properly'.
Thats the situation, but its guess it's no use to you though. Soz m8.

rKane...sorry, but WP do NOT support v.90. (MrVista/Hawkboss/Slash wanna back me up on this?)
They do however support X2, which is probably what your modem is using, as you can have V.90 and X2 co-existing on the same modem, which is not the case with K56flex.
If you try connecting using V.90 you'll find it's virtually unplayable (for Quake anyway, and therefore presumably for most other games).
Check your init string in the WP client...it probably contains a bit that disables V.90 or enables X2.

Sorry lads but Wp do support V.90, with my US.Robotics Voice faxmodem[V.90 outta the box] I'm connecting at 51.6 kbs every time U wanna check your DUN settings because when I changed modems the DUN still acknowledged the old modem as being in the machine so therefore my connection speed was only 36.6 Kbs!!!

Perhaps Wireplay could clear this up by replying to this thread by restating the present position and their future intentions.
How about it WP guys?
thanx for filling me in on the v.90 and X2 situation, as I previously had a FLex modem I always believe U could not have two Protocols running simultaniously
Thanx

rKane - As far as I know you were right in
thinking that a modem can only support 1 protocol.
Firmware is flashed into the modems ROM and
the modem uses the protocol which is flashed
to it, but.... as V.90 is largely based on
X2 technology a V.90 modem can connect to a
X2 Modem (although at a slightly lower rate
than it would another X2 modem) So, although
it may seem a modem is supporting 2 protocols
it isn't it is just using 1 but connecting to
a very similar 1 http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif
And before you start taking the p1ss, and
saying that this disagrees with the origional
problem, An ex X2 modem flashed to V.90 will
connect to V.90 and X2 modems yet an ex
K56flex modem flashed to V.90 will only
connect to V.90 modems (not sure if will it
still connect to a K56flex modem) and not X2
modems.
I know this doesn't help ne1 but I dont
care because I can connect at 48,000bps and
get a ping of about 160 in a FULL server. My
advice would be to get a decent modem. The
best I have ever used are USR Courier Dual
Standard V.eveything's they r simply the best
out there and outlast nething else on the
market. go to 3 fingers page if you want an
endorsement <-(spelling)

Hmmmmm, I was almost positive that WP didn't support V.90, till I read in PC ZONE of a V.90 round up, to test their modems they used a V.90 enabled ISP and... WAIT 4 it...WP, so whats the deal lads, I am getting a chronic lagg problem with my external U.S. Robotics Voice Faxmodem and I wanna FIX it but i gotta know if it's using X2 or V.90 Protocols

I know of two modems that support two protocols. One is the Diamond Pro K56flex/V90 faxmodem (which my son-in-law has) and the other is the new 3COM USR 56K voice faxmodem (X2/V90) which I have. Both come with both protocols already installed.
It may be the case that older modems that need to be "flashed" to V90 lose their original 56k protocol, but I don't know.
Now that the holidays are over, perhaps WP could now reply to clear up some of the confusion about the present position and their future intentions regarding which protocols Wireplay will be supporting http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif.

Well if 3 Fingers has suggested US Robotics 56k X2 modem, with all the trimmings ... and Kick Arse gets a ping of 160 (but still manages to get HIS arse kicked!) then that sounds good enough to me.
My Rockwell 56KFlex is pants on WP, getting consistently bad pings of about 180 - 300 even after being limited to 33K in the init string (+MS=11,0).
On that note, I'm off to go and buy one ... goodbye!
