I've just gone out and bought Kingpin. Great game but I'm getting pings of up to 600 making it a ******* to play!! Can any one suggest how to improve this.
Specs as follows:
PII 300
64 MB ram
16 MB voodoo banshee
I've got an internal 56K modem which I bought for £15 (PCtel I think). Would replacing this help?
Cheers

Well if your modem is a winmodem then thats pants for games, £15 sounds like you got a crap modem. lowering detail levels etc will also help to reduce lag (but wont help ping that much).
What are your pings on other games (unless you dont play other games on the net)

Yep, sounds like a Winmodem. Cheap internal modems often use the processor to perform the 'stuff' (technical term!) that normal modems do. They are fine for the net, but crap for games.
Other than that, make sure error control is off and software compression is on in your Dial Up Networking (well, works for Q2 anyway).

Cheers.
If it's my modem that's the problem, what would you recommend I replace it with?
Not sure on that one. I used to have a USR Sportster 56k and it seemed ok, but since I got ISDN I've sorta lost touch with the good modems. Hopefully someone else can suggest... and of course replying to this will pop yer msg back up the top http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif

I've just noticed a post about modems a bit lower down. They seem to recommend a Pace modem, and also one chap is happy with his Diamond Supraexpress.
