I can upgrade my current system to either an Athlon 700 or a Dual PIII 450 for about the same price. The question is which will be best.

I know I'll need Win2k on the Dual system (I've been running it for a while anyway) but which will give the pest games performance? and which will be best all round?

Si.

Q3A is the only game that can use dual CPUs to do the work as it is multi-threaded. There are no other games that can utlise dual CPUs so for gaming I'll go with the Athlon.

Oh and for Windows 2000, I really do recommend 256Mb RAM (if you dont have that much that is)

Generally speaking a duel processor box will have around a 30% performance increase on the single processor when running NT & multiple apps. As JG says, you need multiprocessor apps to get any gain, games tend not to fall in this category. Other bits & pieces of the OS will run on the other processor if you are running a game, for example explorer and antivirus.
Big single will be better. Big duel better still......
