I got a new Maxor 4.3 gig IDE hard drive but when i connected it up where my old c drive was and tried to install windows on it, a message comes up on the screen saying that there is no hard drive. I have already the format c :/s command but it just says that I have a entered an incorect drive letter. I think that the hard drive might be fried but I can hear it spinning around when it is connected.
Please can someone tellme what to do, do I need to install some new software.

the disk has not been setup yet. get a boot disk with fdisk.exe on it and run it from dos after booting. create the partitions and then format the drive. voila!

U are typing the command correctly and above is a typo? ;)

"format c :/s" would give that error message, u need

a:\>format c: /s

Just checking

Also if u could check if it is fried by (A) seeing if its detected by the BIOS and (B) if can created partitions on it in fdisk

If the new hard disk was fried would it still make noise? I have tried all the above but nothing has worked, when I run FDISK and try and partition it I get the error message "Run time error 6003"

Check hard drive cable is plugged in the right way.....most can be physically plugged in either way up but will only work one way.

.....I speak from experience!

What ver system disk are you using I think the earlier version of win95 only support partitions up to 2gbyte, IF you are using a win98 system disk this won't be yor problem though. ALSO have you set the new drive as your primary partition under FDISK, it won't boot unless it is....

Does your BIOS see your hard drive OK? is it set to automatically detect? have you tried entering the data maually ie. landing zone sectors etc?Just another thing, have you got Red to Red on your power/ide cable?

I have tried both auto detect and I set the perimeters myself but it didnt let set the amount of mb on it. Do you mean the power supply?, surely if the drive makes noise it is properly connected? Would it make a difference if the drive was set to slave and not master???

Please help

I meant the red strip on the IDE cable, as it can go in either way the red band on your IDE cable has to go next to the power supply cable. Also it's very important to have your drive set as master as this is going to be your new bootable c drive

I'm nearly sure that it is connected right because i think that it only fits one way to match up the pins. If it was not connected right wouldit still make noises?

I got it working. Whoever made the drive had the jumpers set to slave as default and there was no documentation with jumper settings with it. thanks for all the help
