Please can someone help me with my over clocking problems. I have a Packard Bell Exuctive with a PB640 motherboard. I have tried to over clock it but itt doesnt make a difference. I tried all the different jumper settings in the manual but they dont work. I am able to under clock it to a P120 but when I tried to overclock it to P150 or P166 it just at 133. Please help.

Having a very similiar computer to you using the pb680 type motherboard & a 166mmx cpu [ which I replaced with a 233mmx. ], what I would suggest is to download the following which is specific to your m/b:
http://www.pbnec.nl/letters/PB640UK.EXE

Its only 117kb and is an Acrobat Reader file. But does gives you the basics of upgrading choices and dip switch info etc.

Another file that may be of use to you is:
http://www.pbnec.nl/support/itemnr/REFDOCS02070101.html

But is over 1mb big and to be honest the smaller file would be alot more use to you.

Also do you need to upgrade your bios? Is PB640 1.00.07 CP0R the latest on your system?
http://www.pbnec.nl/support/itemnr/REFBIOS00220400.html

Overall if there isn't a voltage problem [ due to the differances between the mmx and non mmx cpu ] and if your motherboard can take one, try to get hold of a cheap 166 - 233mmx cpu and replace your current one.

Some good websites to try for info etc are:

Ray's Packard Bell Web Site (http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Lakes/8774/)

Another Packard Bell Site (http://pages.infinit.net/velix/packardbell.htm)

Remember your 133 might be not overclockable anyhow. Read this page in particular:

Thanks a load m8 for all the helpful info. I have been thinking maybe I should try and add an extra fan and then try to overclock it.

Hey Death...lets have some compassion here, not everyone is made of money, and PC's damn well cost money. I remember if I'd have been able to overclock my recently retired P100 to a P120+ I would have been absolutely ecstatic.

Apprecitation of whats in front of you and not whats in the conceptual mist may be the moral of the story?

Though I don't know if you'de quite achieve high frame rates in quake3 on a -p166? but then...stranger things have happened...or have they?

Live long and prosper, in your overclocking endeavours.

Well I didn't get very high fps in q3 with the 166mmx, putting the cheap 233mmx cpu in I got helped a little not much, but will keep the system going for a little longer, as its useable at present and will be good enough for other uses, when I get something alot better.

Whatever system someone has, if there is any way of sqeezing more out of a system, that is simple and doesn't cost anything to do, then go for it.

Basically if you look into the options of things like overdriver processors that may be worth looking into. But again cost may outweigh the worthwhileness of going that route say, then rather buying/making up a new base unit from a new motherboard, cpu & case and using the pre-existing harddrive/memory/etc.
