View Full Version : Overclocking advice-please!
Ive got an AMD K6-2 500mhz cpu,How safe is it to push this to 550mhz?Ive got a heavy duty Socket 7 fan.The bus is the same for both.
Also is it possible to push it more?Is the increase worth it.I like the idea of getting something for nothing,But maybe ill land up with a dead cpu?
Pushing it up to 550MHz won't do any harm and the standard fan unit will probably be fine. Any higher and you might need some extra cooling. There's not much danger of frying your CPU - unless you go OTT and try and push it up way too high.
The only other problem with overclocking is that by raising the system bus speed you're basically overclocking everything in your system - and some things get p1ssed off about it. Older hard disks in particular don't take kindly to overclocking, and can nuke your Windows Registry. So just make sure you backup anything important before you start to dabble :)

Overclocking isnt that bad for your hardware at all :) Dont worry, It's not gonna be destroyed whatever you do. Just make sure you have proper cooling and have backup of all your important files. I have been overclocking every part of my computer for 4 years now and nothing has gone wrong :) I now got an athlon 750 o/c to 1000. So I guess 500 to 550 is not that dangerous after all. No the rules are... I if you overclock it at 550 and you get windows registry errors, just increase the core voltage if your motherboard supports it. Just 0.05 or 0.1 V will do the work. But remember, core voltage increase means temperature increase. Also, if you increase the front side bus keep in mind that your memory and your pci/agp slots are overclocked as well. Just play with it and you'll find a way to overclock it and run it stable. Good luck :)
