I've been reading reccomendations of the geforce 2. Is this out?? or do you lot mean Geforce 256??

Is it a good card, :), to accompany a pIII 450MHz?

Geforce 2 is easily the best card out there. It's available in the states now and I have seen sites saying that it will be available in the UK from Monday next week. I'll be getting one and yes it is the best card for your 450.

(sighs)

There's more to life than high speed at 640x480 res you know. Maybe Trojan would like nice FSAA so his games look the business? Forget the GeForce in that case - not only is it as slow as hell at FSAA, it looks naff too.
I agree that if you want pure speed it's the GeForce all the way. But that's not all some people want, in which case the V5 should be considered. http://www.hardwarezone.com/ubb/Forum2/HTML/022915.html

well i'd be running at 1024x768 on a Hansol 710p monitor, not 640x480!

I haven't been keeping up with the latest releases and therefore don't know what FSAA is, can you tell me pls.

cheers

right i have a ****ing statement to give

i have a p2400 mhz processor and a ****ing banshee at the mo, it is ok, but i want better

i am bloody definately getting the geforce 2 as soon as it comes out good good good

FSAA is full screen anti alliising gets rid of jaggies so to speek and makes the image have real quzality

FSAA = Full Screen Anti Aliasing, It gets rid of all those jaggies in the graphics - so the game will look as smooth as if it's running in a higher res. Both GeForce and Voodoo5 have FSAA, but from the reports the V5's is much better. The trouble with FSAA is that it slows things down (cos the card is working more stuff out, obviously) - and the GeForce suffers badly as well as not looking as good anyway. The V5 on the other hand can keep up good frame rates with FSAA on. If you're not too bothered about FSAA then GeForce is the way to go - with FSAA turned off it walks all over the V5. So it comes back down to the quality v speed thing again. I guess it depends on what sort of games you play.
At the end of the day both cards are great. It's just that the V5 suffers because it doesn't beat the GeForce in many benchmarks - but people don't seem to realise that speed isn't everything. Although to some people I guess it IS all that matters, and that's fair enough...

Obviously you haven't seen any benchmarks of the new voodoos on slower cpu's ie his PIII450. The new voodoos are absolute pants on anything below a PIII600. www.beyond3d.com (http://www.beyond3d.com) have a celeron 450 pulling an amazing 40fps in quake 3 withe the 5500. Try telling anyone that's acceptable for a card costin £250.

FSAA is a means of running at low resolution and cutting out the jaggies you see on lines at low resolution. In my opinion if you are running at low resolution its cause your machine isn't fast enough to run at higher resolution where you don't need FSAA cause at higher resolution the jaggies are ironed out anyway. The only exception would be something like Diablo 2 where you can't run the game at higher resolutions so it would be nice then.

Ace reckons that its slow on the geforce 2. At 640 x 480 in Quake III the geforce 2 is running faster with FSAA than the voodoo5 is without FSAA!!!! Mind you as you go up the resolutions then the voodoo does a lot better. But the higher the resolution the less you need it. It looks like on either card that FSAA is only practicable at 800x600 or 640x480 because it is so fill rate intensive. So, if you want to run games at those resolutions then you might consider it. On a PIII450 you can more or less forget about FSAA I reckon. As to image quality I believe they are more or less the same. Some sites are saying the voodoos (HardOcp) look better whilst others are saying that the Geforce (firingsquad, tomshardware etc) looks better. So, you can see there isn't much in it.

right, well since i'll be running it in 1024x768 or 1280x1024 i think the geforce is for me. The processor strugles a bit on my machine cos it's only got 64mb ram at the mo.
I got a banshee currently and so hopefully should see a big difference.

Thanks for your advice everyone
