HELP!!

Okay, firstly, here is the system that I am running. I have a PII 350, 128MB RAM, and a Creative Geforce DDR running on the latest drivers from reactorcritical (5.16).

When running Q3, I get 46 FPS running at 1024x768 with almost everything set on full.

However, when I run UT, I have serious frame rate problems. I tested it last night, using the Timedemo Statistics over a variety of maps, and these are the frame rates I got:

800x600 16 bit, with medium everything - Average 22 FPS

640x480 16 bit, with medium everything - Average 24 FPS

640x480 16 bit, with everything on low - Average 28 FPS

These performance figures are ridiculous. I know that I don't have the fastest processor out there, but the graphics card is sh1t hot, and I have plenty of RAM. The Q3 figures back me up on this one. I know that UT was not optimised for D3D, but I should be able to get it to run at a reasonable frame rate withut dropping it below 640x480!!!

So, does anyone have any ideas on how to sort this out? I am running the latest patch for UT as well, version 413.

UT is notouriously crap with the GeForce, check the GeForceFAQ (http://www.tweak3d.net/faq/) for info on sorting UT out, you seem to have got all the other normal checks (bios, agp driver, v/c drivers, patch)

hi m8. You're right, UT was never optimised for d3d although they are aware that d3d is the way down which we're heading so they have taken notice. Goto epicgames.com, and follow the link to the UT technical page where you will find an alternative d3d driver .dll file that you can download and place in your system directoy. Must people prefer the d3d drivers from the 405b. patch so you should perhaps make copies of them all and flip around them. I'm happy with my current spec although I've heard for the GeForce that it can make a notcieable difference.

Do as the man above suggests. However D3D is not the problem contrary to post 2. In fact if you look at some of the benchmarks out there the geforce is the fastest chip for UT. The only problem is that it seems to make very little difference what your graphics card is with UT. It's your CPU that's the limiting factor. Your figures do seem a little low however. I used to get an average of about 40 on a PII400 with a TNT2 ultra.

Thanks for the advice guys.

I tried downloading the D3Ddrv.dll file last night, and then with some further testing managed to get my FPS up to +/-33 when running in 800x600 16bit with medium detail levels. This is a bit of an improvement, but I will try whatever tweaks I can this evening to get it to something respectable.

At least it is now playable...
