I heard a while back that 3D cards are capped and I was told that it is possible to "uncap" it by taking of a "cap" on the 3D card board?! Can anyone confirm this and how would you uncap a Voodoo 3 3000 OR a ATI MAXX RAGE 64mb. Tried uncapping my old Voodoo 3 3000 but I can't find the cap anywhere apart from a metal gold thingy which looks like a cap but is firmly positioned into the card. By "Uncapping" I was told it CAN or WOULD improve performance?!

??
Not sure what u mean matey.
you can overclock the card, which is increasing the clock speed of it by using a little proggy (i over clock my v3), is that what u heard about??

Ehhh no, I mean I have been told there is actually a "cap" on the board itself which can be removed, if removed it voids the warrenty but CAN improve performance/fps. Oh and I don't dare to overclock either of my cards too risky atm considering I have no decent cooling thingys to sling on the silly cards

never heard of anything like that, if there was for a voodoo3, then i'm pretty sure it would be mentioned on the 3dfx message boards, but i've never seen anything like it.

If 3DFX did put "How to uncap your 3D card to void warrenty" on the message boards that would be mighty clever of them :)
*stares at card* there are many thingys on the board *stares harder*
*starts getting headache*
HELPO!

Fans arent expensive, a tenner each tops.

there's a whole forum on the 3dfx boards dedicated to overclocking your voodoos, they know people are gonna do it and it don't seem to bother them. they even offer advice on it.
so it not being mentioned on the boards is not as daft as it sounds....
Some cards and i stress some cards used to have jumpers on that when set owuld move the orgional clokc speed limiter to a higher predefined level which was there card test level Eg when they have made the card to ensure its of good quality they would push the card faster than it was meant to go to ensure stable running at its normal level. And the remove or repositioning of this jumper would set it to this mode. but most modern cards do not have this feature.
