View Full Version : What's the max clock speed I can use on my GeForce 2 64mb?

I was messing around with the clockspeed of the card and I set it to max (460 MHZ memory clock speed/frequency). When I tested it the screen started flickering like mad so I disabled it and set it back to default before something bad could happen... :o
Basically, I would like to know what max core clock speed and what memory clock speed I should use for the card (that's safe). The default for core is: 220MHZ and the default for memory is: 365MHZ. But I know the card can do far higher than that when forced.
So if anyone could tell me or link me to somewhere that will inform me how much work I can push out of the card, I'd be grateful.
Thanks in advance. ;)

The card does have a fan...

The prophet2 is poor at overclocking compaired to the other makes, as its heatsinks dont give good thermal transfer and they are too small to radiate heat well enough, because the 64 MB version is already clocked higher, you won't get much more out of it, maybe 10Mhz or so :(
Rivastation managed to get their card up to 225/400 at least so I'd guess you could aim for that.

Errr.. dont think so Fragchild.
The memory on the 64mb card is totally different to the memory on the 32mb card. Even then it depends on the individual quality of the chips. Clocking the GPU seems to make very little difference, so you are best leaving that at 220. Clocking the memory however can give big improvements.
You should be able to get the memory clock to 400 without too much trouble (mine does!). Highest I have seen (apart from the mob with the freezer) is 440 but get there slowly rather than moving quickly as there is less chance you'll damage the card.

On tweak 3d and the tech zone they couldn't get the 32MB card to go as high as the Elsa gladic, but it does depend on the quality of the ram/Gpu. The 64 Mb card has 5.5ns ram so it should be overclocking to around 360-400.

Well seeing as im runing win2k there is no option for the clocking features that comes with the detonator drivers for win9x. The only way i was able to figure out what was wrong with the card was to use powerstrip to lower the clock speeds.
If the card is so unstable at the default speed and the drivers for win2k are insufficient then it should not be marketed claiming full compatibility.
Ive got my return code and its going back on monday. To say im dissapointed is an understatement after the wait we had to endure :(

Thx for the info guys. I managed to clock the core speed to 223MHZ and the memory speed to 400MHZ. Any higher and my games get screwed up or crash when I play them (had to restart the machine over 10 times experimenting! :( ).
But I'm quite pleased. At 400MHZ games run at an alarming rate - which I'm quite pleased with :D I'm just hoping it won't bust the card up with that little fan it has :o
To those of you who get bad performance when running the demos at the default clockspeed (especially isle of mog) - you're in the same boat as I am. I have to decrease it too. I was thinking of sending the card back, but it only has problems with a few demos - I tried it on many games and it works fine.

One more thing - I tested the 400MHZ on Quake 3 and it has a bit of glitching, crazy framerate though (over 100 FPS I'd say).
Unreal Tourney and Halflife work fine.
As for the Isle of Morg demo, you have to bring the CORE clockspeed down, however, you can increase the memory clock speed (the real deal), and it works fine.
I recommend you set the core down to around 215MHZ if you are having problems, it HARDLY makes any difference anyway. It's the memory clock speed that makes the difference (and you can take that up to 400MHZ with few problems).
If people want to send their card back or are worried simply because they have to bring down the core clock speed, don't be. Guillemont/Hercules made a mistake when setting the default, you just have to fix it. If, however, you had to bring down the memory clock speed, then the card should be in the post and sent back immediately - however that isn't the case.
I could be wrong, but I don't think I am.

i can overclock mine for **** one 1hz difference and it crashes

1Hz?
not 1MHz?
ur, you'd never notice one more cycle per second out of 200million
try upping yer ram instead of core tho.
