View Full Version : Connecting a LAN to the internet

I'm a PC guru :p but have no practical experience with networking.
My m8 has a 2 PC LAN setup (no hub) and wants to be able to connect to the internet with both simultaneously for game playing. Windows 98 has an implementation of this but its sooo slow (a m8 reported it took 2 minutes 2 send 9 bytes from the workstation!).

So im trying to convince him to go the IP masquerading or proxy route. I've heard that Kproxy works well and is easy to use. It routes IP packets from the dialup adapter to the Ethernet NICS.

Anyone have any practical experience with IP masquerading on a Win9x system?

Cheers

Hi,

I also have a smsll 3 PC network, however we have an 8 port hub for when other people come over. I use Proxy+ (search at winfiles.com) which is free and is VERY easy to setup to allow the LAN to share internet access (http, ftp etc) but I do not know how to make games like HL work over lan though. Internet works OK however.

i suggest u use something like winroute then, as this has NAT supprot.

Scandecor, cheers dood, proxy is good stuff
u could use it for games on the net, though u would have to go to the trouble of mapping ports etc...

if u use winroute, then turn NAT no for the modem and off for the NIC of the server

then both puters can get in wireplay
and then u can both play through the one line, done it many a time :)

emm, remember to set up a gateway on the client machine to the IP of servers NIC(local addy)

hope that helps :)

bye

cheers for the comments guys :p

Yeah i might recommend winroute coz if I start mentioning port mapping, my m8 will do a runner :)

Dont think it will be that laggy on a 56K coz its a combat flight sim and not a first person shooter. Its less bandwidth intensive methinks.

aint laggy at all, and for web surfing, then the proxy cache takes care of the sites that me wee bro uses(its 20mb)

emm for games, well the best i have had is :
2 ppl, 56k, bt internet, on open qw server
pings were about 180, varying to 160 and bout 220 max

dunno what wp had done that night, but it was nice, cause i aint had that in a long time
