I know this is game specific, but it may work for other games using similar engines.
I also reccomend Dl'ing a file called "DUNTray" it can tweak other settings for modem speeds, including MTU ones.
Here goes :
1. in console, type this :
rate 3500 ...anywhere up to 5500 on 56K
2. in console, type this :
pushlatency -100 ..up to -300 on 56K
3. fps_modem 30 ....up to 40 on 56K
4. r_decals 100 ....don't bother with any more, personally.
5. edit your system.ini file.
find entry under [386enh] that refers to com ports and irq's change it to look like this :
Com1Irq4Buffer=1024
or
Com2Irq3Buffer=1024
That changes buffer sizes for com ports to speed 'em up a little.
On wireplay, with my USR/3COM 56K V90 external, i never ping over 180. except on sundays.
Hope that helps.
Let me know if it does!
Just thought of something else...bring up netgraph (r_netgraph 1)..if you get loads of yellow peaks, the server is waiting for you PC to communicate..bring the rate up in steps of 100, then see what happens. If ya get loads of red peaks, back the rate off again.
Oh yeah...another one!
Phone up BT and ask for an engineer...ask him to increase the gain on your phone line.
They usually do this the next working day, and it means ALOT less errors flying down yer lines = better ping and such..try it!
