View Full Version : AZTEC MODEM
Hi all - been reading this page 4 a while now - can ayone help me with my modem - having a real mare with it!
I've got an internal aztec PCI MDP3858SP-E
Yep I'd never heard of it either - but a mate of mine built the comp for me tax free - can't object to that.
Basically the problems is that I get **** ping nowdays. My system is as follows:
Celeron 400
128Mb Ram
Diamond Viper 550
Runs HL very well and for a few weeks Ihad it sorted - getting ping of ~200 - latency low as well and was doing ok - well sort off. But since they changed the interface its **** - although I'm not blaming that by any means!
Ping starts off low then rises like a rocket - I can keep it 250 ish with a rate of 3000 but then I get lots of yellow lines in my netgraph!I connect via BTi at 48000 up to 53333 (or round that) - connection resonably stable.
My latency is too bad to play anymore.
I've tried new drivers and all the other stuff on this page - no luck - tried MTUspeed but I shagged my comp (well not literally)- just in the middle of re-installing win 98 as we speak.
Any advice at all would be appreciated - except get a new modem - not an option at the mo - off to australia soon soo need my cash!
Thanks for the help

Sensie,
Sorry to answer with questions but can you clarify a couple of things :-
1. "But since they changed the interface its **** " - which interface do you mean mate ?
I presume you mean the WP software when they went free ?
2. "connect via BTI at 48000 up to 53333"
- do you always connect via BTI ?
3. Are you running WIN98 ?
(without knowing the above)
Have you looked at your DUN setings for WP Direct ? In there you should check that you have software compression ticked, and that your COM port is set to 115200.
If you are running WIN98 you should'nt need to use MTU speed as WIN98 lets you have access to MTU size anyway. Leave it at default for now as i'm not convinced it makes a huge difference anyway (let me know if you do want to know how to change it).
Finally, i would try and deliberately limit your connection to perhaps 44000-46000. I'm not convinced that a non-branded PCI modem is going to keep running very smoothly at the high connection speeds you get. I'd recommend anyone to try and keep connect speeds at 48000 max (you generally start losing packets
above that). You'll probably need an additional string in your "extra settings" box of the WP direct DUN config. Let me know if you need help with it.
Finally, you could try deinstalling the modem and reinstalling it. It's a scary prospect with an internal PCI, but your modem would'nt be the first piece of kit in the world that degraded over time.

reply to your suggestions m8-
1) yep I mean since they went free - sorry wasn't very clear there.
2) Yep I always use BTi
although I have tried connectfree with exactly the same effcts
3)yep I am running win 98
others:
mtu - thanks for the tip - just assumed from various other posts that I needed it - cheers.
- the port setting is at 115200
- as for limiting the speed - if you think this would would work - I'll give it a try m8 - I would be gratful of some help with the init settings.
- I've tried re-installing it - no avail - still crap - in fact it detected the wrong model! Even took it out altogether - no go - still the same effects.
Thanks for your reply m8
Any otthers??

Sensie,
O.K - i'm not convinced the commands are right (but i don't have access to any 56k modems right now). However, try this in your modem "extra settings" box (exactly as typed) :-
&U16&N29
If it works, it should force your connection to BTI to be between 33600-44000. Don't worry if you think 44000 is too low, i have variations that can increase this.
If your modem won't initialise after adding the extra settings then just delete them and let me know (i can check further later).

Sensie,
Another "extra settings" option might be :-
+MS=12,1,34667,42667
(Select V.90 with min speed 34667 and max speed 42667).
Also, you might want to try reversing the string in my previous reply (i.e. &N29&U10).
Sorry for the multiple choices but i can't easily test these on a V.90 modem where i am right now.
Let me know if these have any effect ?
Cheers

Sensie,
The previous post is the right one (i.e +MS.....) - just tested it on my rockwell Pace modem and it did the job.

Cheers m8 u r a star.
I'll give it all a go as soon as I get the whole thing up and running (gotta re-install when I get a mo free from work etc)
Thanks for your effort - I'll let you know if it works for me
Cheers agin

Sensie,
(as i've just put this in another thread, i may a well here).
The valid connection speeds you can use in the +MS=...... init string for V.90 are :-
56000, 54667, 53333, 52000, 50667, 49333, 48000, 46667, 45333, 42667, 41333, 40000, 38667, 37333, 36000, 34667, 33333, 32000, 30667, 29333, 28000
So you can play around with the upper limit if you think it's helping to stabilise your connection.

P.S - Please post here with your results, it'd be useful for others to see if this helps.
Hi, sorry for the delay in reply but I've had to re-install a load of my drivers etc - other problems.
Anyway tried what you suggested - the +ms option and I get an error from the modem.
On the dial up connection it says that the modem is in use or may not be switched on - but its interna! so it is on!
The problem seem to have repaired itself a bit - played last night and got ping of around 250-300 - best I've had in a month.
Good enough to get me going for a while - managed to hold my own (?)
Any other suggestion welcome
Cheers

Sensie,
Sorry about that string, it worked o.k on my PACE. I'll have a hunt around for another one.
Having just reread this whole thread, can you remind me why you always access WP using
BTI ? It's just that 250 ping via BTI is perfectly reasonable (i know you've only just started getting this again). Can i suggest you try using WP direct, just to see what results you get. I usually find it's 20-40 ping faster. BTW just recently my WP access via BTI has been very poor.

P.S (If yu don't already) you might also try some autoexec commands to tweak your connection. Some can increase your speed much more than modem changes.
Hi - just had another look at my system config - it appears that my graphics card and modem are sharing the same irq - 11.
The g card is a diamond viper v550 AGP and it won't let me change any of the irq's. Someone told me win 98 allows this - but does it affect modem /g card perfomance?
Also - u know I said I had a good ping the other day - back to normal again - 500-700 absolute pain in the arse! Any help - very gratful
regards
SENSIE
Sensie,
Sorry mate - IRQ's ain't my thing.
Try posting a specific question on the tech boards.
BTW - try this "extra setting" in your DUN to limit the speed :-
+MS=12,1,28800,28800,34667,42667
(i did'nt include all the values last time)
