I have one of these modems on a PII 400, 64 MB Ram, 8.6 Gig HD, and I end up with a ping of about 800!

I don't know why this is but it drives me mad! I have an extension cable between my computer and the hpone socket, and I thought that this may be the problem....

any thoughts?
thanks

Gambit,

Can you clarify the make of your modem ?
I am presuming you mean a Diamond Supra -but it'd be useful if you can confirm mate.

However, I have talked to others who have connected through BT Free on a cable and still get a good ping, I'm gonna check out those drivers when I get home

thanx again

Gambit,

Try checking this mate :-

http://www.funkateers.co.uk/techweb/modems/dse56epro/index.htm

This is'nt a shameless plug for a homepage, but it's a page which shows the config for my EXTERNAL Diamond Supra V.90 PRO. Obviously some of the values will be slightly different for you, but it's worth checking anyway.

Please note that the latest drivers you would need are available here :-

ftp://ftp.diamondmm.de/comm/56kpro/9x56ip34.exe

I would suggest you download and install them anyway, as it can't do any harm.

Goes without saying that, if correctly setup, you should not get a ping of more than 250/300 with the PC you have.

Post back here if none of this works mate.

P.S Which games do you play ?
P.P.S I very much doubt if the problem is your phone extension. I use a 15ft one to my BT socket and it makes no difference.

(I will try that, although I have seen your above site be4, and I dunno if it helped...and I'll try the d'load also thanx http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif

As for the games I play:
Jedi Knight
Quake 2
Quake
Quake 3
Half-Life

I play Team Fortress on both Quake and Half-Life too. Strangely I halve my ping when I play Quake2! But I don't mind http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif

Also, I don't know whether I said, but I connect through BT Internet Free Weekend, so this may (or may not) affect the connection.

Gambit,

Ah ! that may explain some of the high ping (connecting via BTI free weekend).

When i played TFC (HL version) on Sunday evening, it ran like a dogs dinner. Worst i've seen for a very long time. My ping was 500+ sometimes, and it's usually a solid 180-220.

Still worth checking out your modem anyway.

Get a Cable Modem as soon as possible mate.
With a cable Modem you'll get a ping of less than 100 easily with the 0800 number and below 50 easily with wireplay direct.
Theyre expensive but theyre worth it.
