Ok here is the deal. I was 'conned' into buying a Winmodem (box nor salesperson made any ref to a winmodem). V90.56k. I always connect at 48k, but modem behaves erratically, i.e. sometimes sh1t quick, others it hangs.
I am V tempted to go and buy a supraexpress external....
Is there any correllation between connection speed as displayed, and performance. Or are there other 'factors'?

Spartacus,
Yeah - there are lots of "factors".
Certainly a high connection speed does'nt guarantee a good ping/latency/rate.
In fact, when it comes to PCI/WINMODEM modems, i guess the faster they go, the more CPU is used, the less stable your connection is (some of this is conjecture).
You can have a 48000 connection to WP or the net and still have an unplayable ping.
If you wanna play seriously, i'd suggest a branded V.90 modem (Pace, Supraexpress, 3COM etc etc). BTW (nothing against them) but i'd stay away from Hayes at the moment as some guys have reported probs with Hayes V.90 code and WP's.

Yeah thnx m8, confirmed what I thought
I have just purchased a Supraexpress 56e, so hopefully that will solve any probs...
I presume I ought to load the latest driver from their website, but any other "tweaks" I should do?
Cheers
Spart
Spartacus,
Yeah - i would load the latest drivers anyway (although you can check your firmware version by using the "ati103" command via Hyperterminal, as shown on the web page).
Any other in-game tweaks (autoexec's etc etc) can't hurt, depending on your needs.
No reason you should'nt have much more than 200+ on a bad day when everything is working properly.
Anything specific post it here.
Cheers
