350-550 ping in H-L

I have a Rockwell MDP3858 V-E Modem, PII 400, 64Mb Ram, but my best ping is 350(rarely). Everyone else seems to be below 350 with lower spec machine and modems. I tried turning error control off (someones advice in game) but there is no difference. I've also used PC Zone's setup guide which also helped a little. The game also stops completely quite regularly which is sooo annoying.
Oh, I connect to WP Direct at about 46000.

its so good even Halflife.net has it in there download section, albeit an
older version but the strange thing is its the only one of its kind?, and
