ok i think ive goto a dead end, i can design and make pretty good sites now, and the only furthur things i will propably build on will be with experience, and ive now learnt how to make sites work at all resolutions using the god send which is tables, im working on getting more experience making sites work not only IE but NN as well http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif

Anyway, i talk to much http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/tongue.gif, i think its about time i learnt how to write, or better use cgi and asp scripts, asp scripts more as i think ill need those. Note though, the only CGI experience ive had so far is uploading, setting file permissions, etc, and installing premade scripts so far, but im kinda keen to learn, although so far ive leaned more to the design and imagery aspect.

im getting used to using java now, and i can already do flash pretty well, but i find when making sites which have to updated a lot flash isnt a good idea, that why i turn to cgi scripts http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/teeth.gif

Heh, yeah I got to pretty much the same point myself a few months back. Went out and bought "Perl and CGI for the WWW -a Visual Quickstart book" by Elizabeth Castro. Superb book! And a snip at like £14

I think ASP is a lot easier do dah with, but I prefer CGI's versitility (and the fact that every Unix server has a Perl interpreter built in). Haven't found a good ASP book yet... but ASP for dummies didn't look too bad (if too expensive for poor ol' me).

Definately worth learning... interesting stuff, and extremely useful. I think the hardest part is finding somewhere to test your scripts. I was fortunate enough to be able to persuade a friend to upgrade his pro hosting to include CGI support (30 quid for a year, wasn't too bad). Offline testing really is quite hard though... mimicing your server's setup really requires your own unix box (throw Linux on a spare machine and your half way there). If there's an easier way, I'd love to hear about it!

Don't forget there's DHTML, Javascript, PHP and Flash to learn yet -if you get bored http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif

http://www.webmonkey.com has some nice tutorials on just about everything, but I found the more complicated stuff (CGI) really required buying a good book than some 'net tutorials, they're never comprehensive enough really.

G'luck, happy learning!

ohh ohh... don't mix up Java and Javascript, they're two completely different things! Sorry, pet hate there (along with people who ignore netscape)

Actually PHP has this great dynamic text to image generator feature, allowing you to convert text to an image (allowing you to create images in a font that the server has but the viewer may not -as seen on b0rk's titles). I've always wondered if it would be possible to combine this ability with CGI and Flash -allowing for a dynamic Flash site... hmm, must fiddle with flash sometime...

My copy of the CGI book I mentioned came from a small book store in Boston (long story), but I've seen it in PC World, Blackwells and Dillons... all at pretty much the same price. If you have any troubles finding it, it's ISBN is 0-201-35358-x

And no, I'm not on comission
