View Full Version : is it better to downgrade from V90 to K56? (nt)
Spam,
Not if you want to access WP at anything higher than 33.6.
WP does'nt support K56 (they supported X2 because they had USR/3COM servers themselves, so it was easy).

Wireplay doesn't support K56? I'm using
an Askey K56 modem, not flashed in any way,
i connect always at 48000, (WP Direct), and
i get "ping" of between 140-160 on Half Life,
and about 20 points higher in TFC. And i
have got modem specs correct, full docs etc.., so i guess i'm just a jammy b*st*rd.
Should also mention i use no init string at
all, tried various ones, results were always
worse. Thought about flashing to V90, but
heard a lot of bad things about it, so decided to leave modem alone. Very glad i
did, too !!
CUD,
If this is true, then i stand corrected. Thanks for the info.
However, i have ALWAYS thought that WP did not support K56flex. My understanding was that X2 was trialled and then supported but that K56flex was only available on a trial line whilst WP decided what do to.
(with all due respect) are you absolutely sure your modem is not autosensing (K56 and V90) or that you're not using a different access number.

CUD / Spam,
I'm not out to score points now....but this was really bugging me (as i've told loads of people that WP does'nt support K56).
Eventually i found a response from Hawkboss in Mar on the subject :-
http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/Forum4/HTML/000227.html
The relevant bit is "Ummm sorry Dilbert but we only supported k56 as a trial and that has ended with the V.90 upgrade".
So CUD, it looks like you must have an autosensing K56+V90 modem ?

Hmmm, replying to myself now - i must get a life http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif
Anyways, there an even more up-to-date thread on the subject of K56flex access from Wireplay Borg, here :-
http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/Forum27/HTML/000098.html
So...the official line is definately NO to K56flex at the moment - but it should be on the way soon.

well he could just be connecting at 33.6 speed cos WP love anything below 56k http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif
On a different note, I want to put W2 in me init string, but also want to put in +MS=11,0.
How do I combine them?
Slime, sorry not got back sooner, you got me
checking my modem config now, lol. Anyway,
this is what i get in modem diagnostics,
but i understand none of it, and i bought
this pc a year ago with the modem installed,
supposedly as 56k, and i've not tried to
upgrade it in any way. See if this makes any sense to you.
ATI1 255
ATI2 OK
ATI3 V2.083-K56_DLP
ATI4 FM-56PC FOR UNITED KINGDOM 05/2..
ATI5 016
ATI6 RCV56DPF L8570A Rev 47.22/47.22
ATI7 OK
AT+FCLA 0,1,1.0
Thats it, no init strings used, always been
like that.
CUD
Also, number i connect with is 08456010320,
is this not the "usual" connection number?
CUD
Millenium,
Try combining your inits like :-
W2+MS=11,0
or
W2&+MS=11,0
I must admit i haven't had a reason to do this in the extra settings box before.
CUD,
The plot thickens m8 - the access number you use is the usual one, so that's not the answer. Do you know the exact model name or number of your modem ? I looked at the Askey website but could'nt reference to any of the values from your AT commands. The only clue i found is that a lot of their models are autosensing, so that still might be the answer.
I have also asked WP if they can confirm if they support 56flex on the General Wireplay forum, so that might also provide the answer.

(i hate it when i find new info seconds after posting....)
CUD,
Askey provide a program to determine the ID of your current modem. If you don't know it already, maybe it'd be useful to try this :-
http://www.askey.com/drivers/id/MDMID.zip
It may not tell us any more than the ATI refs you already posted, but you never know.

Here is the official story from WP about K56flex access at the moment.

Thanx for looking Slime, i been doing a bit
of checking on my modem. I ran the modem id
program of Askeys, but got no results other
than "No Response", so that didn't help any.
Beginning to wonder if it is an Askey, tho i
was told that by supplier, and documents that
came with it simply read "Operation Manual
for Rockwell 56K Chipset Modem". Bearing in
mind my modem is probably 15 months old now,
i could find nothing at the website to match
any info on the card itself, so, like you
mentioned, i think i'm gonna have to settle
for your autosensing theory (Dual Mode, as
Askey put it!), and maybe i'm not connecting
with Kflex, at all. Anyway, thanx for all
your help and suggestions, appreciate it !!
CUD.
