I have the above modem and can connect at about 46k or sometimes 52k but my latency is usually about 400 or 500 in half-life therefore this severely hampers performance. Anyone got any tips on setup?

Is it possible to upgrade this to a V.90? Some people I know also claim that they connect using a special connection from the USR web page and can connect at around 100k! Is this bull or is it possible? Any help would be appreciated. Thanx.

Is yours a USR branded (retail) modem or did it, for example, come with your PC ? 3COM/USR are pretty twitchy about upgrades/support for OEM modems.

Try http://56k.3com.co.uk/56k.html

Secondly, is it a Winmodem ? I had a Gateway-provided USR Sportster 33.6 x2 winmodem and it was sh*te. I upgraded it to v90 using an exe from Gateway.

BTW, I've tossed it out now, for a USR Voice Faxmodem - much better with WP.

Also, 100kbits/second from an analog modem on a reqular copper pair is, er, not possible. To go higher than 56k, you have to go digital, i.e. ISDN or xDSL.

I used to have the same modem for use in HalfLife, try setting your rate to 4000 and your pushlatency to -120 and your fps_modem to 30, helped me no end as I usually got pings of around 210-220

Yeah. I have type of modem but you are lucky. I get pings of 700 in HL and 999 in Q3A (these are the only games I play online but I know that the modem suck right across the board!0. But I don't know why. I can't upgrade to v.90 because 3com\USR are losers and don't seem to be giving one. I am confused. I have seen 28.8 modems running better than mine. PLEASE HELP ANYONE!

Yeah I now get pings of 200 -300 on halflife and Quake 3 which (to me) is amazing and all because I actually looked at the 3com web page and after trolling through I found the upgrade for my modem I now have a 56.6k V.90 modem that I upgraded for free http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif. I take back what I said about 3com but yes winmodems still suck - because thay use the processer and not hardware as I found out.

If the drivers you need are definately not on the USR/3COM site, try here :-

http://www.driverguide.com/boards/modems/

(you may have to register first...i'm not sure).

I used to have a USR sportster x2 and flashed it to v90 easily.

USR/3COM have a sh1tty website that is fooking useless. All the upgrades are done for model numbers not just the one model but for ones with different barcodes of sumfing they are cack

It is there some where but do what i did. Sell it to your parents (who just use web access) and get apace internal that is easy to install, with an easy upgrade and good website and that will give you a ping of 101-110 in quake and a ping of 120 on halflife and q2 http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/tongue.gif
