does anyone have an intialisation string that can limit my connection to around 44-50k.
Cause if I cconnect any higher than this...it make wp real slow and HL pings unstable.

Eastonia,

Presuming that you have it flash upgraded to V90 (i'm not sure if string is correct for X2), then it should be something like
this :-

AT&N29
or
&N29

In your modems extra settings box. The above should set the max connect speed to 44000.

However, this alone will force the modem to use 44000 only. Please note that if it cannot negotiate this speed (44000) then you won't connect at all.

I have had probs with this string, so please try it and let me know if it works ?

If this works, then you can set a min AND max speed then the modem will negotiate between the 2 values. Not much point in trying that though unless i know the above string works.

So, please try the above and post back the results ?

Cheers
Slime

P.S Sorry for vagueness, but this is all from USR documentation as i've never had a USR.

I have a USR modem and I use AT&N30 this limits ny connection to 45333 and this gives me a ping of 130 in Q2 http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/biggrin.gif I hope this helps http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/wink.gif

I have a USR modem too.

When WP only supported X2, not V90, I used to get a brilliant lowping, yet as soon as they introduced v90 I started getting poor ping and bad packet loss.

Anyone know how to conenct using X2?

BTW - Those strings dont work http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/frown.gif
the only string that works for me is ATS32=98 and that limits my connections speed to 33,600 which i dont really want!!

And Zero - I have exactly the same problem as you, if only there was a string that can make us connect usig X2 instead of V90 it would be much better.

Anyone tried USR's webby and dloaded the technical document?

I have a USR Message Modem; when I connect to any isp or wp it reports my connection speed as 115200 bps (112Kbps). This is obviously the port speed of my modem and not my connection speed.

Anyone know how to get it to report the correct speed. It did...once, but I had to reinstall windoze and for some reason it doesnt work properly anymore

Use ATS32=66 to disable v90 and use x2. You'll get a much less packet-lossy connection, in my experience. Woohoo!

Oh, and the connection speed limiting thing has never really worked for me - I mean, it doesn't seem to make any difference... http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/frown.gif Use the famous lagkiller bind to regain connection when the modem retrains every now and then:

alias +lagkill "cl_maxfps 1;rate 100;netgraph 1"
alias -lagkill "cl_maxfps 42;rate 4000;netgraph 0;"
bind END +lagkill

I have to limit my cl_maxfps to 42, as my modem likes to connect at 48000/21600 (Downlink/Uplink), and it can't keep up if you put the fps higher. You may find you have the same problem. Check Control Panel/Modems/Diagnostics/More Info and scroll down to see 'last connection' stats when you next logoff from Wireplay.

don't you have to dial a different number to use the x2 ?

come on..keep this thread alive!! i've got a USR/3COM 56K V90...and no, there are no upgrades for it yet.

HEY thats ace !!
gonna try it out now.
ive also found out a string that makes me connect at the same speed (54667) but i dont get timeouts ad that
AT&F1&N30&U30
But that ATS32=66 sounds better

Grom

Sure http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif

Yeah, 3Com actually released a v90 update for modems previous to the one we have, but you can't get it for ours http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/frown.gif That new update has much better v90 code, with which you can alter both uplink and downlink speed.

We have to make do with this... Basically, v90 is faster, but unstable. x2 is slightly slower (very slightly) but rock-solid. The only problem with x2 is the poor Uplink speed you get (or I get). Use the lagkiller bind - it works.

Mail me if you need more help - the address is in my profile.

S32=66 makes the modem connect in V34 (max 33600 bps)

S95=1 reports the correct connect speed.

Btinternet tel number 560002 (inplace of 560000) for X2, dont know if this is still available?!

Please tell me Grom (Just a bit tired as it is in the morning, and i didn't go to bed until 3:30) :0 , er so you bind this to a key don't you or do just let it run on it's own?
I think it is binded?

Grom

Yup, you need to hold down END when you lag out. It's not necessary every single time, but I used to get these weird lagouts where my connection wouldn't calm down, and ended up having to reconnect every time, which was rather annoying. http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/frown.gif

Watch the netgraph for a pattern of green and yellow bars - when that comes up, let go http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif

Oh, and ATS32=66 DOES connect at x2 - I've only been using it for about 6 months, so I think I'd know by now http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/wink.gif

Sorry, just had a thought: You of course need to be phoning a number which supports x2 - the WP Direct one does, BT Internet does NOT.

Thanks for that...
Can you also tell me how you disable X2 and just have V90 or something?
Erm, i connect at BTI FREE at 33,600!!!! http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/frown.gif
This annoys me a lot and i thought it might be because X2 does do this...
So i had that exact string u had.
So what do i do to reset it and then disable X2?

As far as I know, letting the modem choose between v90 and x2 will result in it connecting with v90. However, ATS32=34 will disable x2, if you want to try it http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif

From my cable line in Leeds, I can't connect with v90 to WP or Demon Internet - it defaults to 33k6. The BTi free number does connect ok, however. At my BT line down here in the South, I can use v90 to WP/Demon, but the connection is better with x2.

If you have the same modem as ine (USR 56k Voice/Fax modem EXT) then keep the "extra settings" box empty - and you'll connect with V90 automaticaly.

So far the strings are:

ATS32=99 - 33,600 V34
AT&N30 - 45,667 V90
ATS32=66 - maximum X2

Are these init strings USR specific? I have a pace internal flashed to v90, and since i moved house it connects at 49333 everytime. I want to restrict the speed to 44-46k, so would the above strings work on my modem?

The Pace website only give the init stings for upto 33600 speeds (unless im looking in the wrong place).

Cheers

It's amazing what you find when you ain't looking. There i was innocently surfing when i came across this on Barrysworld - it answers my above question. Ill try it when i get home tonight.
