I have been enjoying the net using my pace v90 and cablephone. I have been getting connections of 54667bps from my free isp (ic24) which was cool.

But since I have started getting phone bills of £80 a month =( I have quit cablephone, gone back to BT and signed up with BtInternet for the free weekend offer.

Since then I have not enjoyed the net. I barely get a good connection and when i do i can only connect at 49333bps. I know its the free isp, so i tried connecting via the 0845 number. Then I can only connect at 50667bps. But when i tried to connect via my cablephone I connected at 54667bps!

I know this is probably due to the quality of the BT line but I can seriously not play games online with my current connection.

So Im shouting out for help. Is there ANYTHING I can do to improve my connection bar going back to cablephone and its nice fibreoptic connections?

M8

The actual difference in speed between the two lines won't bother your ping that much. I can get a ping of 98ms at 52k and 105 at 45k - hardly any difference. The biggest problem is the BTi Freecall number you're using - it's absolute pants for gaming. There is so much packet loss and lag it's just about unplayable.

Apone,

What kind of ping do you get m8 (and on what game ?).

You should be able to get perfectly playable games with any connection of 44000+, as long as your modem is setup correctly.

Slime says u should be able to play a decent game at 44,000 soz slime but i have tried everything with my modem tweaks and all i get 49,333 from bt free and get a ping of 380 + and with wireplay direct i get 330+ sometimes nips under 330 but not often and thats at between 50.666 and 56.000 and if i had your ping apone m8 i would be living a dream lol
but then again i am working with a v90 56k flex hsp pci modem on a p 2 400 with a voodoo banshee i hate my ping but i still dont do so bad but i could do a lot more if it was just a 100 or so down to give me a fighting chance against lpbs.

What i said was that you should be able to play a decent game at 440000 as long as your modem is setup correctly. What i should have added to that was "and you have a decent modem in the first place".

Now, please don't take this the wrong way, but you don't have a decent modem for gaming.
I've already gone into detail about why HSP modems are not good, on my web page http://home.clara.net/sflatt/modemtypes.htm

If you swopped your HSP for a "proper" modem, you would get much much better performance, even at much lesser speeds than you connect now.

Snake,

No problem mate. And my list of recommendations are on the same page you've already looked at.

P.S If you look at the modem settings page - be aware that i'll be updating them in the next few days.
