si:

The USR/3Com 56k modems have trouble connecting at v90 speeds on some phonelines. I had the problem on my cable line up in Leeds. If you get an unusually long handshake sequence (all those wailing screeches as it connects), then this might be your problem.

There is a solution which I used (and may have to use again if my new house has the same probs http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/frown.gif) In the Extra Settings box of the Modem configuration section of the Dial Up Networking entry you're using, put ATS32=66 which will force your connect to use x2. This works on ISPs who have USR Dialup equipment like WP, Cable and Wireless, the Demon 2120 number and so on. It won't work on other equipment, as this string will then force the modem to attempt to connect using x2, which other equipment doesn't support, and you'll be stuck with 33k6 again.

Er, anyway. Basically, put the string in, and try connecting again. You can get very low pings in Q2 (sub 120) with that setup with some more tweaking, but otherwise you should be ok.

I had this connection speed problem too we have 8 phone plugged into on phoneline. I found that unplugging the phones from the line when im on the internet give me a connection speed of 50kbps. That might help for those of you have bad connection speeds.

Heres a suggestion, ring your telephone network and ask them to do a line test. Could be a dodgy line not a problem with the modem, hopes this helps http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif

In fact i think you mean 115200 and errrrrr, that'll be your port speed and not your connection speed.

Update to this thread...

I've moved back up to Leeds, where I had again the old v90 connect at 33k6 problem with both WP and C+W.

Determined to fix it this time, cos x2 isn't as good, and I finally found that adding ATS28=0 as an Init string made it possible to connect at greater than 33k6 with v90. It isn't foolproof, and sometimes still connects at 33k6, but it's made me a lot happier http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif

With that string to make USR modems connect in X2 mode my modem only connected @ 33600 with BT 0800 number ... is this 'cos the 0800 number dont support x2?

thanks
