PING GOES 200 TO 1000+ HELP PLZ

I have a US Robotics 56k V90 Winmodem
When playing TFC on Wireplay my ping ranges from about 250 but oftern shoots up to over 1000+. I have tried changing network connection settings like 'error control' but nuthing seems to work. At the task bar it shows that I usally connect at about 42000bps. But once in the game my lag varies.
I need help but plz keep answers simple has I am a bit of a computor biff. THANKS>

make sure that enable software compression is on in your wp direct dial up networking properties
right click on the wp direct icon in dial up networking and choose properties, the go to server types and make sure enalbe software compression is ticked, hope that helps otherwise I'm not too sure, ned

Innfact with a winmodem i thin you might be better off NOT having "software compression" (under server types) ticked, but having "compress software" and "use error control" on (under advanced DUN options).

Check the webite and configure it like my BTI settings.

Also make sure that IP HEADER COMPRESSION in the TCP/IP settings IS TICKED, this can make a massive difference http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/wink.gif

Thanks for your help Slime.
I looked at your website and found it a great help for a newbie like me. But I am still having problems, maybe its just my modem. I was playing TFC with a lag of about 250 when once again it suddenly zooms up to over 1800. And yet Im logged on to W/play Direct at about 42666 kbs.

Think I will take a hammer to my modem.
If you have any more hints I would like the help.

A lot of it will depend on your CPU, as this is used (with a Windmodem) with the comms.

Also - do you use any in-game tweaks ?
TFC is laggier than HL and probably Quake, but some in-game tweaks can help a lot.
Look on the TFC/HL boards for autoexec files.

Actually 250 is'nt too bad with a Winmodem, but i don't think you should expect much more.

Yeah my mate was lucky enough to come across a PIII 500 http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/cry.gif over the summer n' he has a Motorola Voice SM56 PCI (obvious winmodem) and his is the only one I have ever seen perform pretty well under games!
