Please help before I destroy my PC.

Age of Empires retail v1.0b. My friend's spec: Pentium (processor speed unknown) 32MB, Motorola SM56 Voice modem connecting at 28,000. My spec: P166MMX, 64MB, US Robotics Sportster upgraded to V90 connecting at (indicated) 115,200. We've configured DUN in accordance with Slime's webpage. When playing, I get the message "problems communicating with (other player)" then get dropped from the game. If it doesn't happen to me, it happens to him. Callwaiting is disabled. NB I've played TFC on Wireplay Direct with no problems. Please, please somebody help; this is driving us both up the wall! Thanks in advance.

It sounds like you are playing peer-to-peer i.e. trying to connect directly to him not via a server ?

If so, it doesn't sound like a modem setup problem, more likely the networking code of Age of Empires or because you are trying to connect one type of modem (using V90) to another (not using V90).

You might get more stable performance if you could downgrade the 56k modem to use V34. Look in the modem manual or search the web for an extra init string that will force the 56k to use v34.

Sorry i don't have any exact answers, but (as you say) playing on WP is fine, so i don't think it's your internet setup that's a problem.
