View Full Version : Slime! In here now!
Uh... you said, Slime, that BT Internet doesn't support Software Compression. BT Internet, too, claim that it doesn't.
Then why have I (by default) got it enabled in the DUN properties of the BT Internet number????
How do you explain this? Disabling it and Enabling it has next to no effect, apart from a slight ping reduction.
Other than that, your advice has been helpful, to say the least. My ping is down from 210 to 180 http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif
Thanks, mate

Oh crap, it's happened again. I'm a SPY! A SPY! Stop shooting me and wasting ALL my armour! What is WRONG with you? The enemy seem to be able to tell I'm a spy, so why can't you??? Fetch me an engineer, OK? Gah....
Visit BT Internet (http://www.btinternet.com) and get free internet access like me. Trust me... It IS great. 0800 access at the weekends... ooh yes...
And no, I'm not one of their PR people.

And it does'nt........
I'm not sure where you are quoting me from but i hope i said that "BT Internet do not support STAC compression". As you enable this by selecting the "enable software compression" option (under server types), then....i guess you could interprete that the way you have.
BTI do support data compression, done by your modem (i.e. V42). You could call this "hardware compression" as it's done by the hardware within your modem. As opposed to "software compression" which is done by Windows 9x.

Either you configured it so, or that is how it was installed by default http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif. There are no other explanations (apart from the fairies in the middle of the night ??).

Disabling/enabling it won't have any effect because it won't be used with BTI anyway.
Your PC knows this, so ignores the fact that you selected "enable software compression" because it can't use it anyway.
Hope this clears things up - nice to hear the web site info has helped.
Cheers

Damn....
Ah well. I'm currently trying to convince BT to start supporting it.
Thanks for the website. As I've said, my pings have gone down from averaging 210 to averaging 170. They sometimes hit 140 on a full server! I never thought I'd see that on my computer!
Slime, you're the best. If I could, I'd donate some money to you, cos you are essentially, a charity http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/biggrin.gif

Hey, Slime.
I couldn't help but notice your e-mail is a BTInternet one. How did you do the STAC thing then? Or have you only signed up to BTInternet recently? Or is it an old e-mail? Huh? Huh? Huh?

You're right - i use BTI, but only now at the weekends. However, I can use STAC with Wireplay Direct and Claranet (who i use during the week).
Ok ? Ok ? Ok ?
