Lo there M8. It sounds like you are having a hectic time.
I don't know if you know what make your modem is, but you need to find out. SLIME!! Give us a hand here M8. You will definately hear from Slime on this topic M8. Slime is the resident Modem Man. He knows virtually everything about tweaks and stuff.
All I can say is that getting the latest drivers definately helps. Go to Slimes Website at:
http://home.clara.net/sflatt/modemsetup.htm
All the info you need is there.
Now for your other question. The ping is just a name used to tell you of the amount of time (in milliseconds) it takes for your PC and modem to send data to the server (i.e game server you are playing on) and back. If there is anything wrong here, Slime will tell you.
Hope this helps you M8.
Oh yeh, make sure you check out the bit about modem cache on Slime's site. It really makes a difference. Just make sure your PC is powerful enough.

(thanks chokka !)
Hi JAMSYM,
We definately need to know the make and model of your modem and wether it is internal or external (basically as much info as possible).
It would also be interesting to know [how you access Wireplay (via WirePlay Direct, via BTClick or another ISP). Also be interesting to know what speeds you get when you dialup your ISP ?
You can usually find new and updated Drivers/firmware from :-
1. Your modem manufacturers web site (if you know who made it)
2. From general modem web sites, such as www.56k.com (http://www.56k.com)
or
http://www.driverguide.com/boards/modems/
If you can find the correct drivers/firmware for your modem, then it will be free to download and install.
Hope this all helps, please also check my website to confirm it is configured correctly.
Cheers

Thanks you guys
My moden is a Rockwell pci56rvp and on btclick.com i usally get connections of 32000 same as i do on wireplay
oh and by the way how do i find out what ping rates i am getting
JAMSYM,
Well....there's good news, some even better news, then some really bad news.
First the good news http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif
Your modem is made by E-Tech. Their main internet web page is here :-
http://www.e-tech.com.tw/
Second, the even better news http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif
The latest drivers and firmware for your modem is available here (Win95/Win9 http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/shades.gif :-
ftp://nftp.e-tech.com.tw/modem/pci56rvp/135rvp.zip
Download it, install it and see what happens.
Lastly, the really bad news http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/frown.gif
I had this modem when i bought a pre-built PC from Time. It's (trying not to swear but failing) s h i t for gaming. My ping rate was so high i dusted off an old 28.8 modem and used that instead for online gaming.
If you are new to online gaming then i seriously suggest you rip that modem out from your PC, take it down to the end of the garden and slap it about a bit (give it one for me too please).
It is a PCI/Winmodem. Please read the section on my website about PCI/HSP modems, where i explain why they are so bad.
Really mate - you would'nt enter the British Grand Prix in a Lada, so don't try online gaming with that modem.
If you have the money, you might also take a look at my recommended modems guide and perhaps buy a new one. It'll be worth it.
Trust me....even though i'm not a doctor http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/wink.gif
Hope this helps
Cheers

Buggar - the formatting went a bit weird, but you get the idea.
And...i forgot the ping bit.
The determine your ping, you would normally join a server and start whatever game it is you want to play. Then take a look at the score (each game will be different) and you will usually see your score (i.e. how many time you killed people and how many times they killed you) and also your ping rate.
Basically, if you are online and moving around in a game (lets say Quake 2) and everyone else is very jerky and you find it difficult to move, then you probably have a very high ping rate.
If, however, you join a game and everyone (including yourself) seems to be moving around like Linford Christie on acid - then you probably have a good ping rate.
Hope this helps - when you join a game you will understand this better.
Cheers
