Being an absolute novice at this, and using Front Page. Not wishing to use "extensions", I need a hit counter.

Do these things come free, and with no banner attached? If so what, and where.

This is who I use. It is completely FREE.
When you set up your account they will give you some HTML code that you place on your page where you want the counter to show.

They give you stats on how many hits as well as browser used, resolution used and other info.
