Guys,

Thought everyone might be interested to know that there is talk of (another) adjustment to the modem standards.

The idea is to increase the upload speed that V90 modems are capable of (currently limited to 33600).

Discussions are taking place to increase the 336000 upload speed to perhaps 45K or more.
Nothing official will happen before next year (summer maybe) when the ITU (standards body in charge of communication standards) will perhaps revise the existing V90 standard, but there just may some modems on the market before summer 2000 that incorporate the new V90+.

It's too early to tell if any new equipment will be needed by ISP's, although i suspect that it won't be necessary. Even if it is, the main company behind the idea is 3COM who happen to supply the majority of access servers to ISP's (including Wireplay) so you can expect widespread support and compatability.

Finally, this is obviously good news to modem users, although for games players i would'nt expect the new standard to decrease ping times dramatically as it only affects the upload speed.

(Slime grabs back of an envelope and calculator) - a rough guess might be 20-30 less ping with V90+ than with a standard V90. But....every little bit counts.

More info as/when it is announced.

Cheers
