Hi,
Could you try some other free ISP's (BTClick is very quick to install). That should at least isolate if the problem is with Virgin.net or not.
What modem did you have previously ? Was it V90 capable ? Are you sure that Virgin don't have different access numbers for different protocols ? Can you surf on Virgin or is it just your emails causing problems ?
Finally.....are you sure Virgin hasn't just been busy when you've dialled (sorry...obvious question but it had to be asked !).
