If you send an e-mail to : joe.swan@diamond.co.uk then I'll send you my tweaked dial-up connection.

Hmm, not bad mate. About what i'd expect from dialling into Wireplay Direct with a decent modem.
Why not post the tweaks here for all to see ?
Cheers

It's basically the same as the one in your lagless.com guide but with sofware compression and flow control off and a slight rewrite of the modems drivers. I have now got it down to 127.

Hi,
Interesting that you've taken flow control off as i've been playing with that recently. I took flow control off about 2 weeks ago to see what difference it made (on the theory that anything buffering the data will only slow it down). I can't say i've noticed a dramatic improvement but i'm fortunate to use a good ISP (Claranet) and Wireplay Direct, so it's sometimes hard to emulate lag with them.
I'm not sure about the software compression though, i've always found that to work very well (with ISP's that support it).
I would be interested in your tweaked drivers ?
What have you done to them ?
Also (presuming that your email domain is significant !) i would be interested to know about some of the S register settings that aren't documented. I was trying to use the S109 setting (lower connection but higher throughput) but S109 is not even available on my Supra 56e (latest drivers).
Finally....is there any chance of any new firmware and drivers for the 56e ?? The latest ones were waaaay back in January (the internals had 2 revisions since then !).
Cheers

P.S Do you know Mr Hat then ? If so, i hope you've told him off for not using your own products :)

I don't know Mr Hat who is he? I have a leaf hardware controlled modem with an unusualy large eprom on it which can be re-written to allow hardware emulation of software compression. The drivers are just a decompliation of the origionals but with an extra bit of code that allows them to use the software compression i added to the card. All this frees up the buffers and allows me to cram more down the line. Apart from the dial-up (which is tweaked thanks to your guide) it is all very machine specific. also you have to be brave enough to attack you modem with a gas powered soldering iron.

Hi mate,
LOL - So...it's not exactly an off-the-shelf modem you've got there is it ;)
And what the hell is a <BLOCKQUOTE><font size="1" face="Arial, Helvetica">quote:</font><HR>leaf hardware controlled modem<HR></BLOCKQUOTE> ????
Any other more standard tweaks us guys could try (that aren't already on the webby ?).
And....any chance you can make a hardware modem without latency then !

Leaf is the manufacturer others are Diamond, 3com ....
Hardware controlled means that all the modem is there some modern modems use a bit of system ram and the processor to work mine dosen't.
It's better to have hardware controlled as it lets your comp have more resources to run games online! all good then.
I am working on a modem (self built) that hopefully will allow pings of less than 125 in half-life.
i'll keep you posted.

Hi mate,
Leaf !! Never heard of them i'm afraid....
Can i presume you are on the technical side with Diamond ?
BTW - please keep us posted about the modem, although i think you should be aiming for about the 100 ping, then people would be seriously interested :)
Cheers

P.S I dunno who Mr Hat is either but he works for Diamond as well (at least he has a Diamond.co.uk email address)....and he does'nt use Diamond modems either - not very loyal you lot are you http://forums.gameplay.com/ubb/teeth.gif

Diamond.co.uk is our ISP not the modem people. They are actually owned by ntl and their dial up is v.speedy for surfing but even with my skills my modem hits 6000+ on a diamond dial-up. With wireplay direct it's almost down to 110 (112-117 at the mo). I'm hoping to sell the technology (drivers, compression and so on) to a big modem manufactuer.
Let this be a lesson to you all my modem cost £18 and I get super low pings! Be careful when you buy and stay away from WINmodems!!!

Hullo.
Good luck with technology. Anything to help us poor modemers... http://forums.gameplay.com/ubb/teeth.gif
Just remember to acknowledge Slime's fine help. :)
