OK can anyone help me I am really stuck and extremely annoyed.
I have recently purchased a new PC - AMD K7 650MhZ 256MB Ram. The modem which I bought it with was a US robotics, when I got home and tried to connect to the internet, extremely slow connection through Freeserve and wouldn't connect to WP direct.
So I went out and spent £70 on SupraExpress 56e PRO external Modem. Get home - still cant log into WP direct. D/L new drivers Still no luck. Try Slimes guide - you guessed it nope.
On the very rare occasions when it actually gets into WP direct it isn't really connecting - ie. cant see any web pages , ICQ wont work and Can't obtain WON authentification yet it is still using the phone line for something.
PLEASE PLEASE HELP!!!
Hi mate,
Hmmmm, needless to say it should work fine.
Can you enable modem logging then post the log file after a few connections (with any relevant comments about what you saw during the session).
Summit strange going on here.
Cheers

If you aren't on a cable phone get your operator to check the gain on the line as it might be that. BT will do this for their customers for free.
The gain could be too low and your packets are getting huge amounts of errors in them (due to the low gain creating interferance) this should sort the problem out.
Also get rid of any obscure init strings in your modem properties.

Ther you go - I tried to log in three times - first time busy line, next time, dialled in sent about 3 mins making a lot of noises then said that the other PC had stopped responding. Third time succesfully got onto WP direct at 49333 but then the client software would not log into network. Had network may be busy then RAS error 650 and finally RAS error 720.
Please Please Help Slime - anything you can help me with is much appreciated, as I am currently sitting at about £2000 of wasted money.
Cheers
Shane
Have you got "software compression" enabled under the WP DIrect DUN "server types" ?
What O/S are you using ?
Are you using all the original cables that came with the modem ?
Have you removed the old USR modem ?
have you got acces to a BT line ? I'd be interested to know what happens if you it.
I'll think of some more ideas in a bit....
Cheers

OS - Win 98 Second edition
Cables yes originals
Old modem - removed hardware and software
Software compression yes
Do you think I should D/L the WP client again?
Hmmmm.
We can probably get around the RAS error by dialling up WP Direct via the DUN (not the client software), then when it's connected don't start the client but start the program
""C:\Program Files\Wire2_20\wvpowerplay.exe"
That should take you straight to the list of games and servers without having to ID you.
Try that and post back the results mate...i'm still thinking what else it could.
Cheers
Slime
BTW - does it say "STAC compression" or "Microsoft compression" when you click details on the connection icon ?
Just checking.....

I have tried that suggestion already m8 - it just won't Download the list it just sits and hangs no communication between me and the net, I am not sure about that compression thing i am currently on WP internet that says
Challenge handshake authentification protocol
i am currently D/ling the client software for WP - it is going at 3.7k /sec which seems to be quite a good speed?
Cheers for all you help so far m8, I just hope we can work it out.
Check WP Direct for stac compression or microsoft compresion. I'm not 100% sure they have it on the WP Internet dialup.
Cheers

Sorry mate - gotta go out now, back online tomorrow afternoon.
As i say, check for software compression or microsift compression when you dial into WP Direct. That'd be interesting.
Also - can you try another ISP and post the (modem log) results. Don't forget that not all ISP's use STAC compression so you might need to adjust the DUN's for your ISP connections (so they use hardware compression and error control instead). Follow the setup on my webby that i use for BTI for any ISP's you have that don't support STAC, and follow the WP Direct setup for those that do.
Anything else you think relevant please post back here.
Cheers

OK I think that the Compression thing is my main prob - ie, I don't get any compression settings as you have mentioned. Also after speaking to someone else who has the same modem it appears I have an extra odd section
called Network settings TCP/IP setting Advanced I have allow binding to ATM setting - what is this how should it be set?
ta m8
Hullo.

Times are a bit iffy. You sure that's your log file exactly?
Sounds more like a line problem than a PC/modem problem. Have you tried removing all telephony devices except for the modem (ie extensions, telephones, splitters) line and connecting then? That might help troubleshoot a little.
Have you tried alternate dial-ups? BTi is notoriously bad - mentions of ICQ, webbie timeouts and server pings of 1000+ before even connected!
[~A~]prae
(managed to sneak a quick reply in while the mrs is asleep....)
This is very odd mate. WIN98 has STAC support so does WIN95 (with DUN 1.2 or 1.3). I can only think this is related to you having WIN98 SE (not something i've had a chance to play with yet). I'm sure it must support it, we must be doing something wrong.
Did you upgrade to WIN98 SE or was it preinstalled ? What CD's do you have for it.
2 suggestions for now :-
1. Configure WP Direct as my webby shows for BT Internet (i.e. remove software compression - as you can't use it anyway, then select compress data). Try with and without error control and see which you prefer (error control will probably be 10-20 pings higher but might be more stable). This setup should give you a reasonable ping rate.
2. Do you fancy reinstalling Dial Up Networking ? There's something very odd going on here (no STAC ?? and generally bad online performance). I'm guessing about the ATM reference but i reackon it has something to do with ISDN type access (ATM is sometimes used an an acronym for Asynchronous Transfer Mode which is a frame relay variation - i.e. all related to high speed permanent access).
I'm just wondering if there is any way that your PC has been configured for such access and that's somehow screwing up your dial up networking (or TCP/IP).
I appreciate that reinstalling Dial Up Networking is not a nice thought but you have tried 2 modems now and don't seem to be getting any better performance (and i know that the Diamond modem is very good and capable of 140 TFC pings on WP Direct).
Let me know how it's going.
Cheers
