Can any1 help me improve my HL ping

I'm using a Diamond Supraexpress 56e Pro and I can't get a ping below 250 most of the time and for periods it can be over 1500.I have tried using the tips at Slime's site but they dont seem to have made much difference.If anyone can help or give me tips I would appreciate it.

Some questions unfortunately......

1. Do you use any in-game tweaks (i.e. fps_modem, rate, pushlatency ?).
2. What resolution do you play the game in ?
3. What connection speed do you get when connecting ?
4. How are you connecting (i.e. to direct to Wireplay Direct or on the net ??).
5. Have you ever updated the drivers/firmware since you bought the modem.

If so - do you now see "stac compression" or "microsoft compression" if you click on your connection icon then the details button ?

There's no reason you shouldn't get around 150 ping when everything is OK.

In answer to your questions:
I have tweaked several of the parameters in the game.
I use a voodoo1 card so I play in 640 by 480.
I usually connect at between 46k to 49k.
I get such bad ping times when I play using the NTL internet and use gamespy to find a server.I haven't used wireplay much as I can get online at 1p a minute using NTL.
I only bought my modem last month so I haven't updated the drivers.
And I am pretty sure that I am using STAC compression.
