Hi mate,

Nice to hear the modems working so well :)

It'll probably depend how old your modem is, as to wether you already have the latest drivers installed.

Unfortunately they haven't updated the 56e drivers since Jan 99 :( so you would think that any 56e bought in the last few months would have the Jan '99 dirivers anyway.

However, if you want to double check then take a look at the "How to check existing Firmware" section on my webby and it'll show you what to look for.

If i remember, when i installed the latest firmware my fastest connection speed went up from an average 48000 to 49333. Did'nt notice any other differences.

Hope this helps.
Cheers

Ecsuse me for being so simple but -

ALL MODEMS CONNECTED TO A SERIAL PORT ARE HARDWARE!

My sentiment exactly Konan!!!!!

Slime, Stop raving about your little suprae express. Its NO better. All 56 modems are the same for gords sake. My Lucent winmodem is just as good as yours, but for 10 quid. And mines software upgradable! ohh dear...

It's not THAT much of a silly comment

Some have different buffer sizes - slightly different firmware - I've seen little performance difference between them. The idea between the 56K technologys is the same it's just the features of the board that differ. I just use mine for mail now so for me it's splitting hairs.

Then again you could always follow the idea the 'the diamond is more expensive and comes in a colorfull box so it must be better' idea.

Slime m8 (not getting at you AT ALL) but you forgot one BIG thing in your rant this week. - ISP delay. I feel the poor old servers are a bit packed theese days.

Aha - at least now we have a reasoned debate :)

And some have modultation/demodultation and/or compression/decompression chips onboard and some are no more than interface cards that pass everything onto your CPU.

The fact that the "features of the board that differ" means everything in a modem. That's kinda like saying that CPU's and mobo's are all the same exact that some "features of the board differ" !

It's a reasonably valid point (that most V90 modems are more or less the same) when it comes to hardware modems, but i can't agree if the argument covers ALL modems.

Granted it is more expensive than some...but cheaper than others. I stand by my opinion that (especially for gaming) it is the best value modem i've used. And i've yet to hear from anyone who's bought the external who has subsequently been dissapointed.

And i like the box and the colour, but especially those red flashing lights ;)

VERY true. There's no doubt that some ISP's are noticeably quicker than others.

Sorry....i'm in an argumentative mood tonight and don't like statements with no substance behind them (and i'm not getting at you here either mate).

Slime,

You think YOU are in the mood for argueing - find out what the hardware forum thinks of me.

hehe.

No I accept that there may be a big difference to you but dl'ing speed I'm into now.

Mind you an LT winmodem with the latest firmware is connecting at my place at 52K constantly and My oem hardware job is only doing 50K ohhhhhh.

Hi,

Oh dear...you been upsetting people ;)

If this fourm was aimed at modems for surfing then i'd agree with you entirely. In fact i already state on my webby that the LT Winmodem is a good modem. I just wish they were easier to get hold off for the average user ?

However, my emphasis here (and on my webby) is always on gameing. Therefore i generally avoid Winmodems as a rule.

Cheers

Absalutly - I did say my prioritys are differnt didn't I?

I use an ISA hardware job and I can't see it ever being replaced (unless they up the upload).

Do you remember my MASSIVE old modem bible post?

My friend has just bought a new pc, and guess what it has a Lucent Winmodem. Since the word go the modem has been absolute ****e. The highest he has connected is 28800, and for hes pings in Quake 2 well what can I say in the region of 500-600.

By the way I have a Supra Express 56E pro Modem, shouldn't it be connecting faster than 42,667, because thats the fastest connection I can get. Ive heard people saying they get connection speeds of 45 and upwards. How !!!!!!!!!!!!

I am using BTINTERNET, if thats got anything to do with it.

Anthrax,

quote:
I am using BTINTERNET

Thats probably part of your problem. BT use different "modem" servers than WP and i find i tend to get slightly less connection speed when connecting to BT. Obviously the quality of your phone line and the distance from your nearest exchange is a factor also.

Don't worry about it too much though as 42667 is quite a good speed for gaming anyway.

Although if you've never upgraded the drivers/firmware then you might find you get a slightly higher connection speed if you do. Check out my webby for details on how to check your current firmware and where to get the new ones.

Konan - yeah, i do remember your modem bible.
It was very good :)

Cheers
