I got a usr 56k winmodem with my pcwhich seems to work fine for web browsing, but isnt that good at online gaming.
In tfc my ping is from 250-350, with my 56k modem, yet i logged on at the same time as a 33.6k modem who got pings of 150-200.
Ok, my modem is a software one and his is hardware, but that bigger difference?
I was looking at the 3com gaming modem, when it gets released in the uk, but will it improve my ping much?
Anyone, pls help.

There is a fair difference between a software and hardware modem.
My ping dropped from 230-240 with a software modem down to a constant 120 with a hardware modem (Diamond Supra Express 56k e PRO)

To fine tune your modem settings read Slime's web-site here (http://www.lagless.com)

Hi,

There is quite a performance gain by having a hardware based modem over some software based versions.

As for the Internet Gaming Modem, well it's hard to say but there are lots of reviews from variuos US sites here (http://forums.gameplay.com/ubb/Forum31/HTML/000468.html) and linked to from my webby.

I will buy one when they are available, so i can review it. Keep an eye on this forum and/or my webby.

Cheers

The externals (i.e. 56e PRO) are hardware though.

Alternitivly if you want a good ping - put on a pair of braces and get a mate to pull them, say, 20 meters away.

Then he.she can let go.

was just wondering about what is the best internal hadware modem deal about. dont know if the gaming modem is worth its high price, as it wasnt rated that much faster by reviews on american sites (about 30ms).

Thanx

robaj,

<BLOCKQUOTE><font size="1" face="Arial, Helvetica">quote:</font><HR>what is the best internal hadware modem deal about<HR></BLOCKQUOTE>

Leaving out the Diamond's, then i guess you're left with 3COM/USR. Although you have to be very careful about not picking a software version. Alternatively a Pace would be good, but probably hard to find these days as the company is having some problems.

The gaming modem is not about speed, please don't use that as your only criteria for measuring modems when gaming.

It is deliberately built to provide the most stable, lag free connection possible. In fact even 3COM admit that they deliberately connect at lower speeds with this modem, to avoid retrains and disconnections.

That's not to say it'll be the best modem around, but just to be fair to what 3COM are trying to do.

i was looking at diamonds offering (external).
Just wondering about performance difference between internal/external modems.
somewhere i heard if u get an internal hardware one, i'll probably be faster than an external one of the same spec.

Thanx for the help,
