Ive got a Diamond supra 56e Pro and connect to Wireplay at 46667, i use the software compression option and get a regular ping of about 130 - 180 or so when playing CS, the only only problem is that i quite often get 'packet spikes' which seems to happen when im shooting someone (it shows on the netgraph), whats the best 'rate, fps_modem, and pushlatency' settings i should be using. Anybodys elses feedback on their settings would be very grateful.
thx

You need error control off, and software compression on. Thats in the DUN connection for WP Direct
In HL, i suggest fps_modem 40 and pushlatency -100, ive heard that your pushlatency *should* be set at HALF your average ping on the server (heard from Threshs firing squad - i think :p)
Try using r_decals 0, this will help to decrease your pings by about 20% nearing the end of a game, especially on a level like gasworks/crossfire where there are large open areas subject to a lot of rpg marks..
and make sure that you arnt trying to run it in a huge resolution like 1024 on a 450 or less pooter cause when things get going, system lag due to low frame rates will hurt....
/rant
Now let SLime completely take the pi$$ outta me cause i bet most of what i jus tel ya is prob wrng :( although i have been playin HL since the first WP svr for it was up, so i do know what im on about http://forums.gameplay.com/ubb/shades.gif ... just

well, Im gonna beat him to it :)
fps_modem 33 should do u, as the human eye can only see at up to 33fps anyway...any higher is pointless. Pushlatency should be set in between minus one half your ping and minus your total ping.about 90ish would seem right for u. Rate adjustments can be a massive help too. start with a rate of 3500 and move up in increments of 500 till u find the best seting for u. to change your rate type rate xxxx in the console (where xxxx is the number you wish to try). Turning decals off helps a lot in busy areas, so thats a good idea too. not much else really, except a little birdie tells me the next hl patch will be a netcode patch to test the new code for TF2, a reduction in pings across the board of 10 to 20 is expected, tho this may be more or less depending on your ping now.

thx guys for all the info.....i also wanna make it clear that although we (humans) cant see more than 33 frames a sec some animals can.....the first evening after i installed my new athlon system and TNT2 ultra i did a benchmark test on Quake 2, it clocked up over 45+ frames or so and indeed i didnt notice hardly an difference from my old machine, this was until i looked down a my pet terrier "Rock" who had been merrily amusing me moments earlier yapping away at the silly Stroggs in the game, only to suddenly succumbed to a severe epileptic fit when the BFG was fired (lots of explosions, sound, bright flashing colours, gibs etc...) and had forced both rear legs up his poor litle arse due to the violent spasms that had occured. Thus this is a warning to all those who wanna get a nice new G-Force in their machine....unless u wanna get sued by the RSPCA for cruelty to dogs, cats, fish, monkeys, small furry animals..etc then stick to your old Trident 512K ISA card!
Best of Luck....and THX for all the info
