View Full Version : Network and play on net via one modem???

Is networking two pcs with ethernet cards and then connecting to the net possible through 1 modem?

Also if the above is possible, can u also play games through the one modem?

Would another modem help?? But i only got one phone line and 2 sockets if that helps???

Yeah Buzz you can surf via one modem and networked pcs you need a proxy program such as Internetgate or others.

If you wanted to play games then you would really need ISDN IMHO to get any decent ping while you are there not enough bandwidth with analogue..

I have not tried it myself, so only speculation. It should work in theory.

I have tried this in practice!!! Windows Second Edition comes with modem sharing as standard!!!! And if your ping is 150 on one PC your ping STAYS 150 with both connected!!! The reason is that latency is defined by response time and 2 PCs both get around the same response time since its the same connection.

HOWEVER where it really hurts is your rate. You get half rate on both PCs so things tend to seriously slow up if both players are in busy places.

If you had ISDN though you'd get a great ping on both PCs and even a single channel would give about the same bandwidth (rate) as a 56K. A very good suggestion is to go round to a mates house and lan up with them and play on their single channel ISDN and half both your phone bills!!! Both get great pings and good bandwidth too!
