Simple, why do I get pings of around 100 when connected through WP direct onto the Q2 servers with about 8 people when while connected to barrys servers through barrys dialup I get pings of 50-60 with 14 ppl.
No-one would be avoiding this would they...?

I know it's uncanny isn't it how the helpdeskers fly to my aid on the heldesk forum http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif

This is prob my fault - we set the boards up end of the week and the details hadn't been passed through properly to the helpdesk.
blame marketing - I do http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif
p.s. I have asked helpdesk to check these boards out - they should start tomorrow.

Firstly - have you 'tuned' your DUN settings for BarrysWorld? If so then you probably need to make the same adjustments to the 'Wireplay Direct' DUN entry.
Secondly - Barrys apparantly configure their modems to drop packets on busy servers, specifically to keep the ping times down. This can have detrimental effects on playability.
Thirdly - any particular Wireplay servers that are problematic? We still have some old kit that isn't well suited to game serving (it's being replaced ASAP).
Phil.
erm not really much to say but in response to Durzel's questions, I think there was a little bit of confusion over DUN settings as the new software didn't automatically transfer any settings from the old DUN which was being used.
As for it causing problems with overwriting/"losing" passwords to ISP's etc, it didn't happen for me, although if you happened to have a DUN already called what the software wanted to call the new DUN it was going to create you miht ahve had a bit of fun http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif
As for why bother with WP ? Erm good one that, I guess as a net player the only added benefit wireplay might give you is the impromptu team games that can be run, (and frequently are in quake) between people who just meet on the ffa servers and decide to hop onto a clan server for a pickup teamy, dead easy on wireplay cos there's usually always at least one clan server free, other than that mate I guess it's swings and roundabouts time, alothugh you might meet a laod of new people who haven't ventured onto the net yet http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif, different leagues etc
hope that answers a few of you're points http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/teeth.gif

The Private Q2 BG servers are the main offenders in my experience. I don't have ISDN myself, but while adminning a DML match with 6 ISDNers and 4-5 Modemers on the server (Battleground 1, incidentally) I witnessed ISDN pings climb to 139 for one poor soul - about the same as my normal modem ping! The modemers were of course all at about 200 http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif
Yet these sorts of pings do not occur on the Public DM servers, with 12 people, none of whom are simply spectators. But anyway http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif Is there a problem here that can be fixed?

I have not tweaked my ISDN settings at all, on Barrys I do not experience any packet loss what so ever, no wait I think I lost one once, terrible day, anyway it happens on all of your action quake 2 servers.
Hmm excuse me,
BW do NOT drop any packets from its gaming servers. We cap rate limits to stop lpbs lagging modemers but that is not the same as dropping packets.

And barrys have put their max players to 16 now and my pings haven't increased from when there were only 12.
Bias aside, I consistently get pings (on ISDN, Asuscom TA) on all BarrysWorld Quake 2 servers in the region of 35-50 (usually hangs around the 40 mark).
Now I'm an open-minded guy, but aside from the advantages of playing some additional games (which I don't currently - I must admit I'm a Quakewh0re), can someone tell me what the possible advantages are from me playing on WP?
Also, while I'm at it, can someone confirm or deny that using WP can result in losing DUN settings (ie. password for ISPs, etc)?.. I heard someone mention this on a messageboard somewhere - but being a rational, level-headed person I gave it as much credit as the "BarrysWorld drop packets on their modems deliberately" message a couple of posts ago..

now it's started http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif
WP has not stamped on any of my DUN settings and the advantage to me of playing on Wireplay is the community thing and that we have more servers and we have a league and we have a server we all know rcon too so we can set up impromtu matches on the fly etc etc.
Barrysworld have top servers, the action ones I have spent way too long on but we can't play matches there, I know there are now bookable servers but no one seems able to tell me how to book them except for "You can't".
Play matches as in leagues or between clans?
The league servers can be booked by anyone. The bookable clan servers are not open at the moment whilst we make changes to the system.

On Wireplay we have our clan server that each clan knows the rcon to. We often have impromtu matches when we just run into each other and we also have a league that we are currently playing out.

and the league is a teamplay clan thing btw
While there may not be a single server on barrysworld that all clans have rcon to most established clans generally have access to their own clan server. If you pop onto their irc channel most are willing to play a friendly, while this may not be quite as quick it does allow far more flexibility for the larger number of clans on the net.

um most established clans? You're talking Q2, Q here. We're talking Action Q2, a mod, there are only a few clans I know of with their own servers unfortunately very very few of us have any dream of our own server. WP has as close to one that we can get and we'll stick with it until someone starts handing out T3's.
Not sure if this is relevant now or wether it will be for ISDN but with modems I have found disabling Fifo buffers, and error control helps loads in the DUN entry.
My connection to BW has always been pants. Modem defaults seem to work best for them but me being a Tweakaholic changes everything as soon as I get it. But now Wireplay is free I have no need for BW http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif

Ok I have thought long and hard about your problem, I have researched many sites and contacted many experts in the field of ISDN connections. What I have come up with is this;
You are a ****

I'd like to point out that Cheesebury is in no position to complain about prompt replies from helpdesks... he is well renowned for not only taking aeons to reply but in fact for never replying to users at all (particularly those with "difficult" ones) in his so called "real life"...

Cheesebury - Where do you work - 'cos it sound like I don't want to buy one of those products!
Anyway last night from a BTInternet connection I pinged a few TFC servers on wireplay. I got good ping from everything but the final destination that wasn't returning anything.
For three hops I got average ping about 50-60 (I've got it saved at home). So everything up to wp seems to be fine ....
The tool I used was the UOtrace program and the traceroute function.
BTW all the TFC servers were full as usual so I just thought I'd start running traceroutes on wp servers to determine what was up. I was so bored I reinstalled Quake1 too and tonight will see how low a ping ISDN gives me. See I really know how to live http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/shades.gif.

heh heh... you don't think we let him loose on real people buying real products (shakes his head sadly)... we're mad but not that mad!
I only just went from a 350 ping to a 150 ping so I don't know what he's bothered about anyway... well yes I can cos he's so skint he just sits there loooking hungry all day http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/wink.gif
pity those of us who rent our houses and don;t want to spend money improving our landlords house just so we get checked out at the end of the year... grrrrr
