View Full Version : Why can't I connect faster than 31,600?

Copied from the modem board.

Right - I have problems!

I have had my PACE Internal voice modem for some time now - and successfully flashed to v.90 before Wireplay went free.

I WAS experiencing very low pings of around 110 (I still can on Nildram on the net). I then got a cable phone line, which for some time became the scapegoat for my worsened Wireplay connection (300 spiking to anything).

However, Telewest have checked the gain, checked the line and let's face it, I can still connect successfully on Nildram and Lineone at 52,000 (roughly) - which I normally limit to 44,000 (roughly - as you can tell - I am not THAT technically in the know).

However, when I try to connect through Wireplay direct (through the client), I am limited to 31,200 (again, roughly). As I tend to play Quakeworld, this REALLY slows things up, and gives me a huge handicap.

Obviously, I CAN connect through Lineone, but I get a huge packet loss which totally affects my game (see things late, miss sounds etc). I have been told that this is because I am being rerouted.

Why can't I connect at 44,000? My modem setup is standard, and I have read the thread on init strings.

I'm not trying to throw your technical ability into question here, but if, for whatever reason, you haven't actually successfully upgraded to v90, then the modem will try to do the next best thing and connect using the 56k flex standard. If this is the case, you may need to upgrade you modem's firmware, since Wireplay requires that your modem supports the v.8bis protocol before it will give you a 56k connection. To ensure that your modem supports this protocol, you'll need to upgrade its firmware, which you can do by going to www.pace.co.uk and downloading the latest version of v.8bis from the drivers section of the website.

This would only apply if your modem does not support the v90 standard.

You can check whether or not your v90 upgrade has been successful by the following procedure:

Run any comms. software which you have (HyperTerminal will do) so that you can talk directly to your modem.

At the prompt, enter the command 'AT'. The modem should return the message 'OK'.

Then, enter the command 'ATI4'. The modem should should return 'Pace' followed by the model of the modem and the version number of the firmware.

If the firmware revision is V2.0x, then your modem has been successfully upgraded to V.90. If not, it would be advisable to re-flash the modem again.
