View Full Version : Good ping but severe packet loss. Any known cure?

I wouldn't have thought so - that would probably only enhance any problems you have (connetcing faster is probably the last thing you want with your specific problem).

Try downspeeding your COM port a notch and see if it makes any difference.

Sounds good. But how do I downspeed a com port?

Using any ISP I usually get reasonable pings, and through WP Direct I get v.good pings (140-200). Trouble is, no matter what I do, no matter which ISP I use, no matter what my ping is (latency), I suffer major packet loss.

I have a Diamond Supra 56e Pro, PIII 600 with all the usual trimmings, and all the latest drivers.

I mainly play on TFC and Q3F, occasionally going to HL CS to get my butt whipped.

Same problem with each of them. Any suggestions?

Have you tried to limit your connection speed ?

Yes, my usual connection is 49333, but I have connected at 48k, and other speeds down to 33k.

No good. :(

Would it help if I had my line gain increased?

By decreasing the receive buffer option from this screen (Double click My Computer, Sleect Dial-Up Networking, (right click the DUN you want to change), Select Properties, Select Configure, Select Connection, Select Port Settings :-

That reminds me, a while ago I had a program which tested my modem, and it said that the fifo buffers were not set to maximum, and would I like to set them to maximum. I declined because I had no idea what that meant. Should I try upping them to the max? Is that possibley the cause?

Thanks for all this Slime.

Top bloke!

Will certainly do no harm - just ensure you make 1 change at a time so you know what changes (if any) helps with your problem.

Well I've tried everything mentioned so far with little or no success.

1. I've limited my connection speed, which just increased the ping.
2. I've decreased the 'Receive Buffer' to every option available, which made no difference at all (worrying).
3. I've reinstalled the latest drivers (just to be sure).
4. The Fifo buffers are at maximum (no difference).

The only thing which made any improvement at all was having the line gain increased. I now connect at 50,666 instead of 49,333. I still get alot of packet loss, but not as bad.

It's still borderline unplayable (only a total addiction to TFC keeps me going), which is annoying because I get such good pings. On the odd occasion when the connection's smooth it's a dream, but it never last more than a minute.

One other factor is the number of peeps online. If there aren't many on a server (up to 10) then packet loss is minimal, but over that and my packets start dissappearing. My netgraph turns yellow and red. It's not my fault guv, they keep nicking my packets.

Any more suggestions welcome (and no I'm NOT playing on my own!).

I'm using Win 98 release 2, and no, my PC has never been anything other than standalone (and it has no network cards either). Hell, it's only 3 weeks old!

Try enabling modem logging and see how many serrial port overruns it reports after an average gaming session.

Are you using software (STAC) compression or modem (hardware) compression ?

And what size do you have your Windows IP packet size set to (as displayed in the following screen) :-

Slime,
It seems my lot in life is to get on your nerves - I can't find that 'Dial Up Adaptor Properties' box anywhere.

DOH!

I think I'm using software compression. At least that is what is ticked in the WP Direct DUN Properties. Also in there it's set to create a log file, but I can find no reference to 'Serial Port Overruns' in the log. IP header compression is on too.

In Control Panel - modems, Supra Express 56e Pro properties, it's set to:
Data Bits - 8
Parity - 0
Stop bits - 1
And under Advanced Connection settings it's;
Use error control - Checked
Required to connect - not checked
Compress Data - checked
Use Flow Control - checked - Hardware (RTS.CTS) option selected.
Modulation type - Standard

Phew

It's an external modem if that's any use.

I feel like such a retard...
PS - I don't know what's been going on with BTFree the past few days, I can't even load 1 page with it.

i have had the same problem with bt3 not doing much.
make sure wpd is not software compressed i think. and bt3 is.
where do u get net graphs from?

Tonster

You can get a netgraph in TFC by typing r_netgraph 1 at the console (press ` to get console).

Type r_netgraph 0 to switch it off again. I don't know about other games though. I think Q3 has a netgraph on it at all times anyway.

Tonster,

No worries - that's what i get paid for (hang on....i don't get paid :)

Anyway - to find the screen i showed, Double click My Computer, select Control Panel, select Network, select Dial Up adapter, select Properties then select Advanced. Phew !
Don't change anything just yet - just post back here what you see.

I'm also a bit confused about the configuration you have there. Can you confirm this :-

If you Double click on My Computer, Select Dial-Up Networking, right click Wireplay Direct, Select Properties, Select Configure, Select Connection, Select Advanced. Have you got "use error control" and "compress data" ticked ?

All for now.
Cheers

coeshaw - It's the other way around BTW.
Wireplay Direct should have software compression.
BT Internet should NOT.

I do have those two options ticked. Yes.

I'll have to check the other option (Network Dialup Adaptor stuff) when I get home tonight, as I'm at work drawing around Action Man's groin at the minute (don't ask).

Slime,
IP Packet Size is set to Automatic. Is that correct?

Matrix

I heard setting it to small was best, certainly did my modem no harm :)

Also take error control off, i remember that adding about 70 to my ping and it never did anything to the packet loss...just try it anyway, theres some nice programs @ www.tweakfiles.com (http://www.tweakfiles.com) that could help, try smartplay.....

Update - I just installed the TF 1.5 patch and played it using BT Internet (couldn't get WON validation through WPD) and it's COOOL.

No more lag! No more packet loss! I can snipe, I can shoot AT peeps rather than miles in front of them! Greatest Netcode EVER!!!!! And that's using ruddy BT too.

Valve rock!!!
