When i try to connect to any wireplay servers, dialing up through wireplay or via other ISP's and connecting with gamespy, i get the following message:

[BW-Admin] Using Non-standard connection - connection refused

What the hell does that mean? :-)
I'm trying to connect to Quake 2 games. I have V3.20 installed and can connect and play at any other server inc. ones running BW-Admin using gamespy to make the connection, but Wireplay won't let me on.
I'm using windows 98 SE, Home Highway and an Asuscom PCI ISDN card - connecting at 64k

Please help as i want to play on the KOTS server - at the moment i have to play on Mother's in the USA and my ping is awful!

Cheers

OK - i've done the research now, and e-mailed zarjazz (BW-Admin author) regarding this and I seem to know the problem now.
here's Zarjazz's reply:

The strict setting refuses a connection to the server from anything but a
plain vanilla Q2 client running under Windows. Are you using anything
different from that setup?

Well as a matter of fact i am. Its the AMD 3dNow patch, which i'm sure other players will be using. STRICT doesn't allow anything but the standard V3.20 Quake2.exe to be used, and most graphical or processor enhancing patches change this exe file.

So can you turn it off please? It doesn't provide any extra security against bots (this is managed from other commands)and it limits users such as myself and Haggis (who also has the same problem connecting to KOTS) from playing on your server.

This is going to affect anyone who runs the AMD patch for Quake 2 and it affects ALL wireplay Quake 2 games. Other server-admins running BW-admin (inc barrysworld) seem to get along fine without using this setting - please can you?

cheers

I've been looking into this and it seems that this is caused by the settings you have in BW-Admin.
If you have strict set to 1 it will refuse connection to some legitimate users. I'm not sure what the implications of not setting it are, or what it actually checks, but i've e-mailed zarjazz regarding this.
Please can you look into this as some of us poor sods want to use your service but can't!

cheers

For information:

I re-installed quake 2 without the AMD patch and i can connect fine so it seems to be a problem with this patch. Once i put the amd patch on again i couldn't connect. This would appear to definately be the STRICT setting in bwadmin.cfg
