View Full Version : Anxious to know about ADSL.

I don't know much about ADSL technology or what it does, but I would like to. All I know is that it is really fast. But I don't know how fast, or what you need to get it, or anything like that. I thought you were all knowledgeable from looking at the other posts, and I thought someone would be able to tell me.

Unfortunately, it kills all of its students.
ADSL lines cost between £40 and £200 for continuous connection (price depends on speed) and have transfer rates ranging from 512K to over 2M. This is just a (mis?)educated guess.
It also runs into an Ethernet card (probably).

What does the "continuous connection" part mean? If it means you are on the internet all the time, won't the service be a little slow?

Continous connection means that when you turn your pc off the connection is still on. A modem dial up your ISP but when you turn your pc off the modem switches off (usually!) but with ISDN it is always live 24 hours 7 days a week etc.. As for being slow, no, why should it? it uses a different protocol for connecting. The best way to look at ADSL is to imagine it being like a LAN at work, just because your pc's off doesn't mean the network isnt there..
Which leads to an interesting point, when you go out make sure you turn your pc off as being online constantly leaves you more vunerable to hackers..
Since ADSL runs down your phone line, as to wether or not it will be an ethernet card in your PC I dont know, it is possible to send catV via an adapter into the telephone line using a Mod Tap (as used with Voice over IP systems and CTI telephone systems like datapulse's and Lucient Diffinity Net/Telephone servers) so I presume it will be an ethernet card of a sort. If so thats good because NIC cards are as low as £15 for a 10M/B CatV.

From ur post it does not look like u r a techie so here is ADSL in english.
ADSL will Probibly cost from £40 for a 1/2 MB / secconnection to £150 for a 2mb / sec connection if u stick with BT. ADSL is not a replacement telephone line, it runs on an existing telephone line and u can use Voice and ADSL at the same time. The H/W required to access it is going to be a combo of a network card, router and ADSL modem and is going to cost about £250. Although NTL is slightly cheaper to start up, ADSL and its sister technologies are the future.

Is it true that the speed of your connection is dependant on your distance from the local switchboard? If so, that seems like a step backward to me.

That is true yes, simply becasue of the speed of the connection. You will at least get a 256k connection. And remember, there are no phone call charges. I have a dedicated line for my modem and phone bill is usualy £500 a quarter. With adsl, that would be cut to just £120 a quarter. I am sure this is the same for alot of people. As for Hacking, i doubt that most users would not need to worry about this because what would hackers get out of geting info off your computer. They do have firewalls up though, so only an experianced hacker would be able to hack you. Also, it is about as secure as your normal modem is, so there is realy very little to worry about.

No phone bill? How does that work? I'd have thought it would cost more.

DukeTyrant:
Cost More you think?
£40 per month on top of your normal voice calls, well that is a fair bit of money. On average, people probably use the net for about 7 hours per week, even if.

I have a question...
I have 4 lines going into my house, if i wanted to connect 2 to ADSL then would that be 2 x £40 a month, or would i get a discount, or is it £40 per month per household?
Cheers
