View Full Version : Wireplay charging?

Supposing ADSL came into main stream use, the knock-on effect on WP would be disastrous, right? Well, you all know this is due to the fact you won't be paying for the cost of a call, a la conventional modem.
So, here's the point, do you think it would be acceptable for WP to charge a monthly/annual subscription to the service?
If they had the support, I think things could work out fine, (as long as BT get their act together).
Anyone got any views on this? Please reply :-)
My personal opinion and i am sure it is not anyone elses is that WP should switch back to what they where like in the good old days when you paid a 10 quid sub and got local call dial up or you could pay 6/2p a min. It also used to be much faster and alot less lag.

I'm sad to say I do disagree completely http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif
My biggest ever phone bill was when that system was running, I was too young to get a decent enough job to pay for it and then my parents weren't too impressed. I would like to see a flat rate introduced to wireplay, but I can't see it happening any time soon.
(I pray that doesn't start a discussion on flat rate wireplay...)

Doesn't your last point indicate you actually agree with my Topic post? I said that they should implement a monthly/annual subscription fee, i.e. a flat rate, as you most correctly put it http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif
And you would like to see a flat rate? I think most of the UK gaming world (on ADSL to be) would. But here's another question, what do you people think an acceptable monthly (flatrate http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif fee would be? £10-20?
I haven't a clue, because it'll be hard to calculate an effective and fair rate to charge...as the use of WP amongst gamers is subject to *huge* fluctuations.

Ah right, I thought you meant just another 'local call rate' scheme...

Well I for one would gladly pay the old monthly subscription again, if it meant that I could log on to Powerplay without a BT Internet account OR using WP Direct.
Reason is, I am thinking of dumping my BT phone line and getting NTL to give me two cable phone lines. This wil automatically give me an NTL internet account with 1p/min phone calls 24 hours/day 7 days/week http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif
Then in 1st quarter of next year they are rolling out their cable modem service in my area. 24 hours/day for £40/nonth http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif
So I would want to access powerplay that way, but at the mo' its not possible http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/frown.gif
So stick with current scheme and subs for others?

So should they have the current system for normal modem users, and subs for people who are going to be on ADSL?
Yeah, I see you're point, but there's a small problem with that. Not only would it be an admin nightmare for WP, sorting out modem accounts from ADSL ones, but just imagine...you're forking out a nice sum of cash for ADSL...would you want to play Joe Schmoe with a 33.6 modem?
I suppose you could imagine WP setting up two separate networks...one for Cable/ADSL and one for modem users...and inter-connect them for those who really want to play people with different connections. But I see this as highly unlikely...imagine what it would take to set up a system like that? And, from my point of view...it wouldn't be too effective either. Too clumbsy. I guess only time will tell.

Dont be silly - the money WP will get from advertising they wont need to charge... havent you notice the adverta suddenly appearing on the boards now?
Also Ive never used the WP dial-up to connect to powerplay - I use BTinternet. Im guessing that Wireplay will make deals with the ISPs that offer ADSL for connection to WP in much the same way that they did with BT
