ADSL's speed during the trial was all to do with which equipment BT gave you. Te simple fact is the xDSL range of lines can acheve much better speeds then cable modems and if you want to use powerlay you have to use ADSL anyway. As for cable never being on Powerplay, i think that it is wrong to say that it is a rival company as now Gameplay.com run WP not BT.

In answer:
1)WP is a company in its own right now - IE not tied to BT or cable. Therefore it can (and will) make a deal with NTL to allow cable modems to connect to powerplay in exactly the same way BT have made a deal with WP.

2)Yes thats entirely true BUT SO IS ADSL - in fact the DSL stands for Digital Subscriber Line and ADSL will also always be connected - ie 24/7 - exactly the same as cable.

To mention something else - Cable has provision for these speeds:

10Mbit download, 640kbit upload - YES THATS 10MBit download!!!!

ADSL offers 2MBit download, 640KB upload...

Now it seems by that then that cable modem is by far better...yes it is BUT:

Cable limits: 10Mbit can be limited by the cableco(which is has been to about 512k?) and the speed will vary depending on how many others in your area are connected to the same C-Mux...

ADSL Limits: Not fully tested and uses the original twisted pair to connect to the subscriber so causes some interference.... 2Mbit has been limited to about 512KB again...

Jeez, you guys bitch at each other and miss out the obvious facts.

WP is company.
Companies are there to make profit for their owners.
WP makes it's money from your phone call.
-Even on an 0845 it get 0.6p/min while you are online.
There is nothing techically stopping you playing on WP with a CM or ADSL.
However WP won't get their 0.6p/min - it's not 0845 is it?
So, they have put extra hardware in the way (a firewall to the cognosenti).
This is why you can't see the servers from GameSpy etc. - even if you have the IP addresses.
You need to be running the WP server software that can talk thru the firewall.
Even if you are running WP software and you haven't dialled in on a WP/BTclick/BTinternet line, you will only see a very small selection of Open Servers - ie open to the massses. Just a teaser...

This is why WP will NEVER support CM or ADSL.
Not if they want to stay in business anyway...

If you have the time and the expertise, why not hack the WP powerplay software, and fix it so it thinks it's DDI??? It could be the way forward.

I dial up through BTInternet and NEVER use their software ever ever and I can assess ALL THE SERVERS...

BTInternet IPs are ALLOWED through the firewall regardless of wether you run the stupid gay client. (BTW - I use a combination of GameSpy and just writing the IPs down and using them in console)

The firewall screens IPs out only to let certain ones in - the ones which have a deal with WP (eg BT internet)

Now WP get THE MOST MONEY from advertising NOT THROUGH 0845!!!

CM is NOT a digital line. It runs off a normal analog cable TV line. Just at something like 3.2KHz instead of some **** on BT lines.

If you have the option of either a cable modem or Adsl now then your one lucky fecka as theres plenty of peeps out there that can't have either for quite some time.

There won't be a separate Powerplay/Openplay server pool once WP3 is released. All Wireplay servers will be net facing, so anyone on any connection will be able to access them, which is nice. :)

ADSL uses a standard copper twisted pair, IE a phone line.

CM uses your TV line (be it a digital or analogue TV conn)

And cable pings kick the arse of ADSL. :)

I guess its because they haven't taken the plunge into the increased volume of traffic yet and have the resourses to cope with it. So they open the beta to existing customers to test the water, not in the know but my opinion.

It's still beta for the final product, which is when the totality of the server farm will go net facing.
