View Full Version : Telewest - anyone know the score?

Lo all,

This is just to find out if anyone else is a Telewest customer and if they know what's going on with cable modems. I'm on a telewest subsidiary (Yorkshire cable) and they refuse to tell me any information about plans, dates etc. and the websites for both yorkshire cable and telewest are craaaap.

So.. anyone know?

It looks like at the moment like telwest may be taken over by NTL. C&W(formaly Mercuary Comunications) are looking to get rid of their Cable operations and move back in to the Business Telecomunication market. A few months ago they where in talks with Telwest, who where interested in taking over their operations. During this time NTL found a huge amount of financial backing from France Telecom (who have shed loads of money) and so they started talking to C&W as well. C&W prefer NTL to Telwest cos they r ofering them more money amoung other reasons. Now, who ever buys C&W eventualy will be in a position to buy the other so here is what it looks like at the moment;
NTL will buy C&W by the end of the year.
NTL will then get some more money together and buy Telwest. This will mean there will only be two major telcos in the country, BT and NTL. At the moment it looks like if this happens, we could see huge reductions in telephone charges as a result of these takeovers.

right, C&W consumer buisness has ALREADY been bought by NTL!!! Get the facts boy!

Telewest DOES have plans for cable modem by the way...unsure of the details...

Ive spoken to the NTL guys and if you are currently a C&W customer you will have an NTL cable modem before April 2000...

April 2000? bloody hell, thats a little too long for my likings. When will adsl be availiable in the surrey area, or just in general?

I spoke to Telewest several times about this. They have finished trials and should be doing cable modems around the end of this year/start of next year.

If you are an NTL customer at the moment then it is likely you will get cable modem very soon... There are two areas that have it already (down south I think surrey or somewhere like that)

BUT if you are a CWC customer, NTL have not yet bought the business from them yet so they cant install modems until they own it http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/teeth.gif

But expect to see cable modems VERY soon if you already have NTL in your franchise area...
