OK, I'm unhappy now. The ADSL trial is coming to an end and BTInteractive are starting up a BETA trial at £50 / month! The B***ards! And they're nocking down the bandwith to 512 Kb/s.

And the horrible thing is, I don't think I can survive without ADSL anymore...boo hoo hoo. Oh well, looks like it's an extra £20 a month out of my pocket http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/frown.gif

Yeah, because I'm on a BT network I get access to Power play as well as Open Play. As for the ping it's lower than ISDN on good days, although it's heavily affected by the BTInternet system. Over the weekends the ping can be higher than ISDNers. All in all a nice bit of technology - bout time BT brought it out. They've sat on it for a couple of years I think, "trialling" the technology.

I used to think BT were OK, but they're playing this game badly. Let's hear it for some decent competition!

It doesn't make sence that a smaller company in hull can offer this:

http://www.theregister.co.uk/991019-000018.html

while BT charge double for a lesser service.

To get this beta do you have to be in surrey and do you have to have already taken part in the first trial

I'm fairly sure about this but doesn't Hull council have power over the telecommuncations. My Computing teacher told me a while ago about how there was a decision made as to whether or not BT would get control of the phone systems. It turned out that Hull council had been the only borough to keep control. Hence they can allow such damn good offers from companies...
Of course I may be completely wrong, but it gives a pretty good reason to go to Hull University and study Internet Computing! http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif

The details of the kingston ADSL stuff can be found at
http://www.kingston-comms.com/news-kv2.html

The register seems to have got a little confused...
Its 256k and via a TV (i.e. a lot less demand on the external internet connection and so they can reduce costs. Also its via a set top box which TV channels comes through so no extra ADSL gear to be installed (all in one stb)

or as quoted from their web page:

Internet and e-mail service with no telephone call charges for a fixed fee of £14.99 per month at speeds of up to 256kbps - four times the speed of ISDN. KIT is also offering a keyboard that uses infrared communication with the set-top box, to accompany this service

EVA1, OK I've just checked and yes the beta trial from BT is only available to existing triallists. How many triallists stay on is debatable, but I don't think there are that many gamers on it (most of whom, I suspect, will stay with it).

Check out Freeserve and Nildram as they are both introducing ADSL trials. For Nildram go to:

Hull council has nothing to do with the telco that exists in Hull...

Hull has for many many years had its OWN telco for its area - thats right BT DONT operate in that area!!! For one this Hull has ALWAYS had FREE local calls!

Hull Kingston Telecommunications has its OWN network in Hull even before the days of post office/GPO - when they made the network in Britain Hull was forgotton for some reason

Therefore BT HAVE NO CONTROL WHAT SO EVER OVER THIS SMALL AREA OF BRITAIN.

The issue you where refering to was that of OFTELS decision to force BT to relinquish control of its own local loop network (local loop means the copper cabling from local exchanges/road side cabinets to your house). This would mean that other Telcos can use it and upgrade it. In some areas the cable companies have installed there own local loops but for the most part they will soon be able to use the existing copper for a fee.
