At the moment i connect using a Pace 56k external, i get a ping of around 140 onTFC and as low as 120 on Kingpin, which is more or less all i play. At one stage i considerred getting ISDN, but the high rental fee put me off, however all this ASDL and Cable stuff is really confusing me.

What is it?
How will it affect my ping?(compared to ISDN)
When can i get it?
How much will it cost me?

Sorry if these are questions which you've already answered, but i'm sure there are still a lot of people, like me, that don't have a clue.

I can't explain ASDL because I don't understand it myself, and I don't use BT so it doesn't really apply to me.

However, cable modems are a completely different story. A cable modem is a device that lets you connect to the internet via a cable television line instead of a standard copper phone line (PSTN). Download speeds are up to 512K per second, while upload speeds are up to 128KB/s.

The cost for the service is a £40 per month flat fee on top of the normal £8.87/month line rental. This may seem expensive but the advantage is that you get a permanent connection to the net with no call charges! If you are a heavy user, this will probably save you a small fortune (It would save me about £100 a year at the moment!).

The equipment required to use this service is a Pentium class PC running Windows 95/98, a cable modem and a network interface card. I think the reason thats required is that most of the external ports are too slow to drive it. Why they can't make a USB or an internal version I don't know.

NTL are the only cable company that I know of that are offering the service so if you live in an area that uses C&W or Localtel you can use them. NTL are currently working on providing the service to all their areas. Parts of Guildford and I think Birmingham already have the service, while parts of Bedfordshire (yippee!) and Hertfordshire are supposed to be having it introduced some time in this quarter.

I hope that helps a bit. Click here (http://www.ntl.com/cablemodems/default.asp) for more info.

It looks absolutely awesome, my monthly bill is £120 on average, so it would save me a bundle.

I've just read through the internet site, any entered my postcode, and as expected it wasn't up in my area. I live in York, does anyone know when i can expect it to be in use here?

I think ADSL may be a while coming to York... from the list of cities they were trying to get ADSL to before March 2000 I don't think York was one of them, but I can't quite remember http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif

As for Cable Modems, well I dread to imagine when anyone in the North of England is gonna get them. I live in the Manchester area and it's looking a long way off.

<HR></BLOCKQUOTE>

It uses a network card because unlike any device for the PC - this is made for LAN networks and provides fast data connection and is unexpensive unlike USB...

Any way a cable modem is a network device similar to a HUB or a repeater so connects to network interface cards...

Thats why they cant use USB

Fianlly USB was invented when? Im unsure but it came as standard with PCs about 2 years ago... Cable modems on the other hand have been around for years and years...

gudoo,

you got it in one. As to when Bradford are having it, I don't know I'm afraid. Put your postcode here (http://www.ntl.com/cablemodems/hispeed/buy.asp) to find out.

mikkyT,

Have you never heard of a USB to ethernet adapter? No? Well check out this (http://www.entrega.com/con_ether.html) and explain to me why they can't make a USB cable modem. After all, USB is faster than ethernet (12mbps as opposed to 10mbps).

Even so, why can't they make an internal cable modem? It would surely more economical to incorporate everything into one internal board? I'm running out of electrical outlets here for christ's sake!!!! http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif

3com do internal cable modems but you can only get the modem that your ISP supports

NTL only currently offer a cut down cable modem service. Telewest will be doing a 10mbit cable modem service on the 31st of march 2000

Now thats more like it

Vizard a question: How'd you know about Telewest's plans cos i've just looked on their website and there's nothing at all there. I'm on Yorkshire cable ( a telewest subsidiary) and its impossible to find anything out from their information line.

From what I heard a typical cable TV er.. cable is one way only and you still need your phone line to send the requests then the data is launched down the cable wire at hi speeds, but the phone line is used for uploadin' and requastin' stuff!!!

which means you still pay the typical phone rate! and your 40 Quid a month

ffs where does this crap come from

the ntl cablemodem is 2-way
this is why u get pings of 20 with them
40 a month is all u pay for the cablemodem service.

u do not need a conventional modem, i mean think about it logically then u would get pings of 150 wouldnt u... and u'd still have to pay a phonebill so all in all it would be a pretty ****e service.

/sorry to come down all nasty but if i find the source of the 'waa need a phoneline to upload' im gonna eat him http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif

There is some truth in the modem upload for cablemodems.

I myself have a cablemoedm with NTL and its cool http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif anyway.. cablemodems come in two flavours, 2-way (sends data up and down the cable line) and 1-way which requires uplink data to be sent via a modem and phoneline. The 1-way style is how older CM services use to work, but new technoology meant that they can send up the cable line etc.

NTL is not 1-way, it is 2-way and thus we get nice pings (usually) tho recently I've had major lag periods at different times of the day..

/me pats his cablemodem

Oh yeh..

There is a Wireplay channel in Quakenet, its mostly filled up with QW players, but everyone is welcome, its a general suppirt channel - I do my best, and all the WP workers are usually there! So come join #wireplay on irc.barryworld.com or irc.b0rk.co.uk

To find out I phoned up Telewest's Internet info line by dialling 150 from my cable phone. If you havn't got one dial 0500 470 000 and ask for the Net Dept

Cheers m8,

i rang 150 and they said "they couldnt tell me anything at the moment!" and they wouldn't even tell me anything about digital telly. Grrr! I bet my region doesnt get the service at the same time as yours - which is about typical. Cheers anyway though m8 http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/shades.gif
