I am thinking of getting a cable modem through my cable company, £40 a month for the service with unlimited online time totally free of charge. But if I got this, would it be the end of my time on Wireplay Powerplay.

Currently you would be restricted to the open play servers, and I can vouch for the fact the performance isn't great either.

Once Wireplay 3 is released, sometime over the next few weeks, you will be able to get back into all of Wireplay.

I had similar reservations to you, but now I've got my cable modem I don't regret it one bit. I miss all my m8's, but I still keep in contact for when it opens up again.

Pings of 30-50 and 40K/s+ downloads are well worth the switch.

NTL, they're the only ones actually rolling them out at the moment. The others are just talking about it.

I'm just lucky enough to be in the first area to get them (North-East Hampshire & Guidlford area of Surrey)

I'm on C&W, in south Hampshire. Doesn't look if I can get it yet.

40k/s? Geez, I know there is a difference between the Australian and UK cable services but I get 600k/s+ on almost every Australian server there is. And in HL I get pings about 40ms, so good gaming all round http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif

The uks network of cables and lines is poor and there is few digital lines and other high speed systems for us to use in the Uk so even with a fast Cable modem the line quality will determin the speed and unfortunatly this means lows for us peeopole.

I use NTL and their not getting Cable Modems in my area (Grimsby) until February 2K. 2-3 months isn't a long wait but considering i've been waiting since the middle of '98 it was a long wait.

Why is it taking so long to get everone conected? They have the technology so why aren't they using it.

PS.

If anyone knows, how long have the US or Europe had Cable modems for?

I don't know about them, but us Aussies have had cable internet technology in general public use for about 4 years now I think, something like that...

[SD]Gen.Thanatos:

40K/s refers to 40 KBytes a second, not 40 KBits per second, so the speeds are comparable.

411: Now you really don't know what you're talking about! Cable modems are connected to the cable provider's own network via a cable infrastructure layed specifically by the cable companys to handle high bandwidth traffic.

If you have a cable modem your connected to a network that has far greater potential than 512K/bits per second, but each cable provider decides how much bandwidth to allow the consumer to have.

Schizoid, when I said I got 600k/s+ I was also referring to kilobytes. Thats why I was surprised that you guys got so low, but then if the lines are poor then that would explain it.

It nought to do with the line quality. It's the cable providers capping the bandwidth so that their servers don't get overloaded and so that eveyone gets an equal share of the bandwidth. Obviously they can increase the amount of bandwidth they give us but that will probably be after they have finished rolling it out when they can then come back and upgrade eveything.

Well at least i hope they will.

Oh yeah and does anyone know anything about NTL taking over Cable and Wireless's residential operations cos i'm on C&W and i want a cable modem?

i think what 411 was probably referring to was cable phones - which do (still) for a large part, run over BT's exchanges and part of their infrastructure. As regards cable modems, because they can't be run over BT's infrastructure, they are running on the cable TV structure which is fully owned (for the most part) by the cable company and/or its subsiduaries.

Unfortunately, because we are in the UK, every new technology is introduced years after it should have been - this is due to the fact that BT and the cable companies have us cornered - and they won't bother launching products (which might reduce their operating profit every so slightly) today - they'll wait for tomorrow - when it really should (and could for that matter - 90% of cable/adsl infrastructure is in place in most of the UK) have been launched yesterday. > :(

However, Fortunately (if the below news is true) this particular piece of news should mean that BT won't be fussed about launching ADSL as it will probably make them more money than unmetered calls :: look at this ::

So fingers crossed for mid-december - I know MY phone bill needs the cost-break.... :)

10 MB/S Full Duplex operation is possible
how much would you pay I was looking for £40
per month flat work from home gaming and video for free with this. This requires though the internet community to raise £400 million to make it work but you would get education for free with it as well and hopefully I can educate the world while you have fun. Eventually I would hope that you could play games at the cost of buying them from gameplay for example though I am not connected with them . This is not a joke would you like to do this and give BT a kick up the arse. I hope to drop the cost to £20 month after 6 months and then give it for £10 month after another 6 months and then for free If you are prepared to put up withn the odd advert though I do not like those ****ers anyway. a further twleve months and all will have it for free at home and business will pay for it. This would not affect what you do anywhere else. This idea starts UK then moves europe
e-mailme back if you are intersted. There may be a £35k job work from home option available to you. We are looking for some people to have a go with this, and have some fun

Yours Paul Passmore B.Eng

peasant not really interested in money just having some fun and educating the world on your terms (like BBC EDUCATION tie up etc)
or you can play games flat rate remember
