Didn't really bother me last time, but then I wasn't really siting near any smokers. However, if the majority goes with it, I reckon it should be non-smoking. Or at least respectteh request of someone not to light up next to them.

There will be designated smoking areas, including a bar area, separate to the main gaming hall. We asked you whether you smoked or not on the signup form, so will try and take that into consideration when planning you seating arrangements. However, a no-smoking policy is probably the best option, although we'll make the decision shortly.

It seemed to work pretty well last time where people just made sure the people they were sitting near didn't mind before sparking up. Noone seemed too bothered about any of it.

Although in cases where the person on the left is a smoker and the person on the right isnt, how do you work out if it is fair to make smokers go and smoke elsewhere rather than at there own PC ?. No offence to non-smokers (good on ya !!), but if a person smokes, its his choice, and it will be/want to be his choice to smoke at his table while playing a game.
As you can imagine, this is a weekend event, so u aint got to put up with loads of smoke. And for the sheer size of the venue, and fans blowing from PC's, the smoke will soon travel high into the air, so hardly giving anyone grief at all. Jesus Christ............... At the Birmingham WP party, loads of peeps smoked (me and zero must have got through about 200 between us in a weekend !!), but the lads sitting around us didnt complain about the smoke at all as it was not noticeable.
So for all those non-smokers, DO NOT turn anti-smoker and starting preachng s**t, and complaining that u may have to sit next to a smoker, for all u know.......... You could be a smelly B.astard and the smoker has to put up with that smell.
The saying goes share and share alike, so non-smoking people, just enjoy the weekend and dont even bother to worry about ciggy smoke !!

Now that the secret's out that I'm a medical student I have to say that there are sound medical reasons for not wishing to be sat next to a smoker, over and above the simple smell and discomfort it may cause. There is now hard evidence that passive smoking is a real damage to health. You could argue that it's only for a weekend, but people shouldn't have to be subjected to a damaging environment. I have no objection to people smoking, but I do personally ask that they keep it to themselves and not impose the environment on others. That's just my personal opinion though.
It's not just the aesthetics, but whenever I come back from a LAN party my computer stinks of smoke for weeks. I'm pretty tolerant of smokers and have been known to dabble myself in the past, but others are not so tolerant.
I'll need to discuss with James and Crimson about the smoking policy at the event, and we'll get back to you about it asap. There are some pretty hefty extractor fans there so we may be able to get away with smoking in the venue. It would probably be a good idea to keep smoking in mind when planning the seating plan.
Anyway, more on this later... I've got a train to catch.

Interesting one this because I am nearing two years since I quit so hate sounding like an annoying ex-smoker but it is grim sitting next to someone chain smoking for 48 hours when you don't really enjoy it. I don't care if peeps smoke, but I have the right to care if they do it loads next to me. Sniper we're gonna have to disagree on this one mate. Anyhows, if you smoke next to me I'm gonna eat ten tins of beans some raw eggs, curry and prunes and then sit there next to you trumping all day (except you get no real health risk fom that!) see if you enjoy that!??>>>>>

Just been reading your post on the AOE board infoming them of the places for other games and to sign up, and I'm sorry to see you being treated like that by some of the supposedly "more mature" stategy game players. There was me thinking that we gave you a hard time about all sorts. Still it's their loss, and our gain. All qw and q2 ppl should have a look at the names we get called there, but please, don't react by being immature and slagging them off.
I guess that was a no win situation, cos if you'd not held any places for them and have whinged about not being able to go cos it was full of quake and q2 people.
soz gone of topic a bit there, I'm a smoker and to be quite honest I don't much care whether we can smoke in the venue or not. If I have to go outside I will, and, nothing ****es me off more than the smell of stale cigarettes hanging about a room.

cheers Tigs- I just think the AOE hostility is because they don't usually go to LAN parties whereas QW people do so there is a difference in attitude. I am really keen for strategy people to have a chance, but if strategy is still thin on the ground on Monday then I will have to make a block tranfer to QW i.e. most of the waiting list will probably make it in.

Oh, and on the smoking point........... It speaks for itself, I argue one point, someone argues another. Its been like that ever since ciggy's were invented.
I can see the point about passive smoking - and in no way would I like to pass my fag smoke to other people (that aint fair), but in a situation were players wanna sit by each other (who they know) and dont smoke, it dont half making the seating order a little harder to organise (of course it aint impossible to be done - just gotta keep everyone happy).
What if all smokers wore those under water helmets so no smoke escapes ? (hehe)
Ok, whatever decision is made, it wont bother me. I understand the situation.
Ideas: Either designate an area for smoking - then all players get to sit in team order.
Or
Let smokers sit where ever......
Or
Split it up into smoking and non-smoking.......

As for me, I dont smoke meself, but I dont care if the guy next to me lights up every 5 minutes.
IMHO you should be allowed to smoke anywhere, anytime and once again, I am no a smoker.

How can I best put this to you guys? We're on the edge of the largest Army depot in the country, patrolled by MoD police who are armed both with firearms and very big alsatian dogs (something I have first-hand experience of last time I was at the venue). They patrol the area around the venue about every hour so I'll leave it to your imagination as to what they'll do if they catch anyone outside smoking illegal substances.
Obviously we're not going to make ANY consideration for you guys who wish to smoke those sorts of things. We'll have smoking areas but if you want to risk it it's up to you.
Don't get me wrong. I personally feel that Cannabis should be legalised, as both tobacco and alcohol would be banned were they to be discovered now for the first time.

can i just say ive smoked for 10 years and decided to try and give it up as all you smokers know its darn hard too..
ive lasted 3 weeks so far and doing well.
Id just like to say if you hear a big scream around 11.30 at the bar,,then that means that all my m8ts who i will be seing for the first time will be smoking around me.
meaning only one thing can i resist the temptation???
if i do happen to start again at the lan party then i will be suing everyone responsible for organising the club,

I personally feel that the right of each group,ie smokers and non smokers, is of equal importance and that no one group should be made to feel like outcasts just because of a habit often aquired when not of a responsible age. Please take into account that smokers are required to smoke by need, not by vindictiveness. I also agree that non smokers should not have to tolerate smoke billowing over them. Just please bear in mind that, You condem smokers as passivly killing non smokers, yet you will be willing to let this same group of non smokers who condem smokers as killers, take small lethalbites out of their internal organs by DRINKING. Which YOU will be supplying :-)

If you start on the smokers, where will it all stop? There in solid medical fact to support the theory that the main cause of cancer is in fact WATER. Yep. Water. Look at the facts. What has everyone that has ever had the big C had in common? All drank water. See? Also, we all close our eyes to just how ADDICTIVE water is. You can give up fags, but ever tried giving up water? See?
Facts, all hard and nasty but fact all the same. So in conclusion, leave the smokers alone. Watch for the water addicts. You will see them trying to hide their distastefull habit by drinking it with hops yeast and sugar in it, but the side affects will be all to obvious.

Umm... As far as the smoking debate goes...
This thing about not using cars as they pollute the atmosphere too, and give you cancer etc etc.
Er, yeah, so what? Cars are actually fairly useful things - they get you to LAN Parties, and the pub (though not back again - hehe) and so on. Whereas smoking gets you... ummm.... a cough, smelly clothes and luverly brown teeth and fingers, as well as an increased risk of cancer blah blah.
Also, I'm sure if I drove the back of my car into the hall and started revving the motor, you would complain about the exhaust, but not really outside in the carpark. I don't object too much to people smoking unless they don't give a sh*t whether I mind or not. DO NOT TAKE DRUGS WITH YOU.
The MP's there are likely to be bored. If they even think theres a faint chance of a bust, you will have the Civilian police all over you. It will make a normally boring weekend be exciting for them.
I guarantee they will be looking for it and you WILL get nicked.
Its not worth it, you may end up with your PC and stuff all confiscated and if the Civvi bill do turn up, any Warez could be a bit of a prob too. Dont give em an excuse, just say NO!And have a clean fun but drunk weekend. After all, how much fun can you handle?
PS and dont forget you are going to be on MOD property and the rules are slightly different even if you ARE a civvi.

Rules have are now that anyone caught smoking illegal substances on the premises will be asked to leave.
To be honest, I can't believe some of the stuff you are all putting on these boards. This is all publicly viewable by FAST, the civil police and the MoD police. These people do not let 300 people events take place next to the largest Army depot in the country without doing some background checking. Yet here you all are openly talking about copying Warez and smoking Pot (and god knows what else takes your fancy). Do you want to get the event raided?
